This is early in the season, but still, 15 games have been played which is quite a lot of games. It's enough games to establish a starting trend, and that starting trend doesn't look good.

The following FG% for Artest comes from http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ron_artest/career_stats.html:

    Year Team FG%
    99-00 CHI 0.407
    00-01 CHI 0.401
    01-02 CHI 0.433
    01-02 IND 0.411
    02-03 IND 0.428
    03-04 IND 0.421
    04-05 IND 0.496
    05-06 IND 0.46
    05-06 SAC 0.383
    06-07 SAC 0.44
    07-08 SAC 0.453
    08-09 HOU 0.361
    Career -- 0.423

His FG% of 0.361 is unusually low and it's practically 9% lower than last year. What makes it more perplexing is that he has a career 0.423 FG%.

Not sure what the reasons are, but you would think it's the system he is in at the Houston Rockets that's the issue. You would think his FG% should be higher because he is with TMac and Yao and he should be getting that many more open looks but he isn't.

Thoughts as to why his FG% is so poor so far this season?

He's been taking a lot of bad shots, and when he goes to the rack he's either just throwing the ball up at the basket or getting fouled.

    His first 15 games as a Sacramento King -- 93/246 or 37.8%.

    This isn't that surprising.

i don't mean to hate on your thread, but we don't really need a new thread for this since everyone knows how poorly he's shooting. Its the same problem almost every game, he's basically taken the role Tmac had last year of trying to score on his own, unfortuntely Ron can score, but isn't a scorer, he can't get his shot off cleanly like tmac and doesn't have enough lift to finish in traffic consistently. He's taking a lot of bad shots, many forced by him or the team forcing it on him since no one else can do anything.

When you're playing the kid for freaking 40 minutes (i.e. today), I don't see how you can expect him to be outstanding on both ends all day everyday.

Notice his percentage always dropped whenever he went to a new team. Anyways, he only shot better than 45% once in his whole career.

shane was manning the main guy today for 30 minutes. artest still shot 6-21.

there's no excuse. he literally SUCKED. it's time for him to start playing better. it's not like he's facing double/triple teams. dude is facing SINGLE COVERAGE.

and the ridiculous amount of gimme layups he has missed is REALLY frustrating.

Trade Artest and Head to the Heat for Marion at least he can knock down a jumper.

maybe we just have to change his role, bring ihm off the bench. obviously him playing a lot of minutes in a starting role ain't working.

i'm sure once he finds his niche on this team offensively, he'll be much more efficient.

but one thing i have to say though, i can't believe how terrible he is around the rim. he puts rafer to shame.

The Kings knew what they were doing giving him up. Do you really think they would give up a superstar for an unproven rookie and a vet over 35. You get what you pay for, Artest is no 20/10 guy but we didn't give up 20/10 talent to get him.

What did you expect, he's a new Rocket acquisition........by law he has to become a inefficient scorer.

This seems to be a true statement. Look at Brent Barry, he can't hit an open 3 to save his life now that he is a Rocket.

Further evidence that JVG ruins players offensively. Francis, McGrady, Spanoulis, and now Artest. Fire him.

He shoots a low percentage for his career. I hope nobody was expecting him to shoot lights out.
