Armey pushes Belo measure Majority leader tries to force sale of Dallas-area media property 10/07/2002 By MICHELLE MITTELSTADT / The Dallas Morning News WASHINGTON – House Majority Leader Dick Armey has attempted to slip language into a military appropriations bill that would force Belo, parent company of The Dallas Morning News, to divest itself of one of its Dallas-area media properties. Congressional and company officials said Mr. Armey's office asked Republicans to insert the provision as House and Senate aides completed work Friday on the military construction appropriations conference report that awaits final congressional action. Though the provision was not included in the working draft after objections were raised, House and Senate conferees could add it when they meet early this week to finalize the bill. Executives at Dallas-based Belo and a Texas congressman accused Mr. Armey of abuse of power, saying he is retaliating against the company out of anger at its newspaper coverage. Yeah, I was just reading a snippet on politicalwire.com about Armey blaming the Dallas Morning News for his son's defeat in the primary.
Frankly I hate it when a politician inserts a totally unrelated provision into an important piece of legislation. That way the rest of Congress and the President have 2 choices: 1) Enact it into law 2) Look bad for defeating an important piece of legislation. Both parties do this...and both parties are wrong for doing it.
I see no problem with doing it as a compromise between parties. We give you A for B. I don't like it when one party is pushing stuff down the throat of another which is always the case.
