Right now, Kobe is probably the best 2 in the league with Mcgrady as a runner up. Do you guys agree? Kobe is only 23 years old and I see him passing Jordan in 10 years or so. Kobe has yet to develope the post skills that jordan had and wasn't as good defender as Jordan. But Kobe will only get better.

I kind of like T-Mac a little better.Mainly because I don't like Kobe. Don't like Jordan either. I guess he could "surpass" him, but I don't know. Kobe may not get credit until he is the man on the team. JMO

BTW, this should probably be in the NBA Dish. Unless we could put Mobley into the mix... :)

I know he has surpassed him in 2ndhalf scoring. :D :p

I don't think he has already surpassed him, overall though. But I would like to see what Kobe would be like without Shaq. He may do a lot better, but he could also do a lot worse. Who knows? Maybe with Ming and a low post presence, Mobley would avg 28ppg, or something like that.

I think that's very true. Jordan was known for carying a team on essentially his own shoulders. Skill wise however, I think Kobe is allready very close to Jordan. He does have the post moves and the fadeaway along with every other move in the book. The only place where Jordan was better than him was in athleticism and this was only during Jordan's prime. Although people think Kobe is flashy, he is nowhere near as flashy as jordan was in his prime and he can't come close to the way Jordan would jump or make a move in the air. Fundamentally they are both sound players.

No! Jordan is the Standard for small men.Kobe makes great shots but does not have the great all round game like Jordan.

Kobe is closer to MJ than anyone in the NBA right now. VC? Please.

T-Mac? Please. I know he's a one-man team, but for once win a playoff series in the weak ass East.

I guess the Mobley factor didn't stay.

I didn't watch much of Jordan, so I don't know how to compare the two. All I know is Jordan scored a lot, and got some rings. :)

Hmm... there may not be many other guys who are closer to Jordan, but my biggest thing on Kobe, like I said, is that he is not even the man on his team. If he was, he may avg less stats. He may avg better stats, too. He could win nothing, or win 7 straight. I just want to wait and see how he takes to being the man.

    JMO.

Yes. I think Kobe will eventually surpass Jordan. I actually like Kobe's D better than MJ's NOW. But Kobe isn't on Jordan's level at the offensive end YET.

I think Kobe is probably the best 2 guard in the league right now but there is a world of difference between the best SG right now (which is debateable who it is) and the hands down best 2 guard and maybe best player ever--Jordan. I admit this even as a total non-MJ fan.

Now after Shaq retires (or is clearly not the key horse for the Lakers) and Kobe carries the Lakers to 3-4 titles and averages over 35PPG a couple of seasons I'll mention him in the same breadth as Jordan. But until then this isn't even a worthy debate topic except for those with totally myopia on the present. Kobe also doesn't deserve mention at the level of Jerry West or Oscar Robertson or Magic Johnson either yet--to mention some other of the best all-time guards. Right now he is more on the level of Scottie Pippen, Clyde Drexler, Mitch Richmond, George Gervin and Joe Dumars--other fellow great swingmen from the 80's on but so far away from deserving mention among the best of the best.

McGrady's better than Kobe, but neither of them will be the next MJ or really even surpass MJ's accomplishments.

In fact, I think both players would be happy to rival each other for the next 15 seasons.

    Very well said.

Kobe's done just about as much as he could as Shaq's sidekick, but until he's the main cog of his team, it can't be justified to compare him to Jordan. As of right now, he's the closest (still quite far) anyone is to Jordan, but because he is a sidekick, Scottie Pippen is a more apt comparison (that's not a bad thing). Wait till Shaq retires and maybe Kobe can become the "next Michael Jordan" (a title that he seems to want so badly).

Jordan has more rings + when Kobe wins 6 people will still say he had them due to shaq. The only thing holding him back from being Mj is Shaq.

Kobe has the ability but probably would rather win every year then take the chance of taking over and not winning.

I agree with Kobe not being in the same class of Jordan. Frankly, it's not even close. Still, he shouldn't be expected to lead the Lakers to rings after Shaq's retirement, if there's not another all star caliber player on the team.

Right now if there's no Shaq and Kobe has some help from just one nice frontcourt player, say Juan Howard, the Lakers can still make the playoffs under his leadership IMO. That's not shabby at all considering all the CBA players on the Lakers.

Kobe has proved he's effective dealing with double teams. Shaq's presence doesn't benefit Kobe's much, barring a little defensive backup. Shaq clogs up the lane, takes away touches, and passes out of double teams often go to Fisher and Fox etc... One thing is for sure, that after Shaq's retirement Kobe'll be the man. He'll get all the touches and assists off double or triple teams, and become much, much better than McCrady once he releases his full potential. Although he's already a tad better than T-Mac.

And no, Kobe won't be the next MJ. There's only one MJ.

I don't think that Kobe will get close to Jordan. Kobe is kind of like Pippen, except that he is a better player than Pippen, by far. I think that TMac is the best 2 guard in the league. If Shaq retires in a few years and becomes a cop, I'm sure that the Lakers won't dominate like they do now.

I wouldn't say by far. Kobe is better on the offensive side than Pip ever was, and is comparable on the defensive side(Although, I would give the Pippen of old the benefit of the doubt over Kobe).

Pippen was a very, very good basketball players. Don't let his performance post-Bulls allow you to think otherwise.
