With the recent decline in Napster use(as much as a 41% decrease) due to the filtering that has been instituted, are you still using Napster and what search techniques are you using? ------------------ Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
I'm not. I search the record stores now. (do they still call them "record stores"? haha... I'm old. ). ------------------ My company declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, then agreed to merge with another company, which also declared for Chapter 11 bankruptcy... should I be worried?
I recently got my dsl installed so I went and downloaded n*pster, logged on and downloaded about a dozen tracks I was looking for. Unfortunately they were all mis-spelled to avoid the filters. I don't use it as much and am going to try winmx. It's a peer to peer program like n*pster, except you share all media files.... here's a link to a recent CNN story on n*pster alternatives. here's a link to winmx happy surfin' rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! Yep, but I don't download (or even listen to) popular music, so I don't notice that big of a difference. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
I stopped using Napster recently. The traffic there has dwindled down so much that the program became virtually useless to me. Also, MusicCity.com recently restricted access to their servers, so people who were using file-sharing programs like WinMX or FileNavigator to try to connect to the Music City servers would find that there were *0 files, 0 gigs*, and hence could not find any MP3s or other downloadable file types. So those programs' effectiveness were limited as well. This is because MusicCity.com recently started their own file-sharing program, called Morpheus. Using Morpheus is the only way (well, there is another way, see below) to download files from Music City servers. The program is, in a word, lame. Thankfully, a few days ago I discovered KaZaa.com ( http://www.kazaa.com/ ), a web-based file-sharing program, also successfully connects to the Music City servers as well as their own. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Cold Hard (edited May 04, 2001).]
I'm using Lime Wire. Pretty fast and good. Anybody know the name of that song about the waitress? I just can't remember her name. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
LimeWire aka "Gnutella" seems to work pretty well. I hear good things about I-mesh also. I never plan on paying for a CD again in my life....Screw Dre, Metallica, and the music industry. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater

Why a hostile attitude to the music industry when they expect your money (legit purchase), yet want/desire their product enough to go through the trouble of downloading it? Is the music industry good or bad because you are wishy-washy in your post. Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! Resistance is futile....you will be assimilated.
Those who use LimeWire, what is your download success rate? I only manage to get a connection and download 10% of my requests. At this point, i think it sucks. Be careful especially about Gnutella, as you can get download virus REAL easy. Something I ran across was a hotmail hack. You email the 'so-called' server and its suppose to send you back whatever hotmail password you want. Not a big concern, but you have to worry more about your accounts like PayPal. ------------------ Im too drunk to walk ... Im driving home!
"Be careful especially about Gnutella, as you can get download virus REAL easy." Not true. All Guntella/BearShare/LimeWire does is allow you transfer files. You can't be infected by a file unless you open. You just have to be careful about what files you open. In the "Folder Options" dialog in Windows Explorer, you have an option to "Hide file extensions for known file types". Make sure you UNCHECK this box so you can see the extensions for all files. Only open files with proper extensions. If you open a file called "BritneySpears_NUDE.jpeg.vbs", you're running a VisualBasic which may infect you with some nasty virus. If you open a file called "BritneySpears_move.mpeg", (assuming "mpeg" is a registered extension) then the worst thing that can happen is that your mpeg player will come up and say "This is an invalid movie file". You're more likely to get infected by a virus using Outlook. Outlook had holes that allowed malicious ActiveX code to be executed by simply opening an email message, or (in some versions) just by viewing the message in the preview pane. Opening an email message is a "normal" thing to do. Downloading random .vbs and .exe files and opening them is a "stupid" thing to do. You're no more likely to get a virus using Gnutella than a web browser. You download viruses with your web browser too. Web browsers are also capable of transferring files. Don't fault the program that allowed you to download the file. Fault your dumb ass for being stupid enough to open it.
Audiognome is pretty good. BTW, I don't know anyone with Imesh, any of you have it? I need some people on my list, or I can't d/l any music. ------------------ Never Underestimate the Heart of a Champion
BearShare rocks. I've used it to successfully download 2+ GB of LEGAL live Phish/Dead/String Cheese/Etc, and I just started using it last Sunday. If you do install BearShare. MAKE SURE TO UNINSTALL SaveNow. The BearShare install requires you install SaveNow, which "provides you with great free offers from all over the Internet". You can uninstall it from the "Add/Remove Programs" dialog. I checked the filesystem and the registry after I uninstalled, and I didn't see much SaveNow trash hanging around... I didn't mean you can get them through 'just connecting to the computer' (actually, its quite possible if a virus is written to do so) What I have noticed is people with name their files with lots of keywords ... for example, Filename(lots of spaces)Mpgaviasfsexnakedmasturbationmasterbate****pornolesbiangaydildotoysplayboyxxxdivx gifcelebsoralanalanimalshorsesdogslittlegirlpussy.ext You can easily name the file something that is eyecatching and my want the user to download. Im not blaming the software, but nor can you call a typical user a 'dumbass' because (s)he's not as proficent in computers as you. ------------------ Im too drunk to walk ... Im driving home! I used to use napster and then Napigator but when I started having connection problems with Napigator I switched to http://www.audiogalaxy.com It is great. You use a web interface to chose your songs and it will automaticly download them using a little satalite program. One of the nice things is if the user you are downloading from it will pick up right where you left of with another user. The only downside is sometimes the speeds are slow and you cant change what user you are getting it from. You also cant stop uploads but I dont find that as a problem. ------------------ ~John~ Help keep the obsessed thread alive post the reasons why you are an obsessed Rockets fan by clicking here
"I didn't mean you can get them through 'just connecting to the computer' (actually, its quite possible if a virus is writen to do so)" Please explain. Unless you open a file, it is not possible for your computer to computer to be infected by a virus because of Napster/Gnutella/Internet Explorer/Netscaoe. "What I have noticed is people with name their files with lots of keyword" You gotta pick better keywords. You can't search for "Britney Spears" or "xxx nude". You get crap. You only find a file because its name contains one of your keywords. If you say I can only find files called "...pornolesbiangaydildotoysplayboy...", then I have to ask what keywords you're using. Bearshare also allows you to filter out all small files. When I search, I set BearShare to only show me files larger than 5 MB, which filters out most of the porno spam. "nor can you call a typical user a 'dumbass' because (s)he's not as proficent in computers as you." True. I shouldn't have called you a dumbass. But you shouldn't have said "At this point, i think it sucks" just because you're not as proficient in computers as I. [This message has been edited by jamcracker (edited May 04, 2001).]
