First off - To all 3G owners, no need to worry about having to replace 3G with a newer or better iPhone again. Why? Apparently iPhone Nano is coming. Rumors and supposed leaks/prototypes have been flooding the net lately. But what confirmed it for me....Vaja cases (a highend case maker) now has a section for iPhone Nano as of today. This has happened twice before with them leaking product info before both the EDGE and 3G iPhones were announced. And the fact that this is happening before (well a stripped down) MacWorld has me thinking iPhone Nano could be announced then. The rumors list details as... %20 smaller and thinner then current iPhone 4GB Supposed $99 dollar price tag...
Even smaller? Does that mean the screen and on screen keyboard will be smaller as well? Would make texting even more of a pain.
So far that rumor is solely unsubstantiated. While Steve Jobs in an a**hole, i don't think he's that much of an ass to release a new iphone months after the 3g iphone was released. I'll believe it when Apple releases a proof of concept or something. I think it's pure speculation. There's also a rumor that the 4th gen iPhone will have a physical keyboard in combo with the electronic one. Like all rumors given out about the iPhone, i'll believe it when I see it. They also said the iPhone would support flash on the OS update to 2.0....
Well, for one thing, Apple did release 3G iPhone at last year's MacWorld, months after the EDGE iPhone hit the shelves. I know, I bought an EDGE, and then later sold it so I could get 3G. And furthermore, Apple is rather good about leaks on new porduct. Usually, its aftermarket production companies (like Vaja cases) that leak details on coming Apple products. So dont look for Apple to leak anything...
What's so surprising even if they DO release another phone? Apple's done this with ipods, macbooks, etc. Every company goes through design/product change at a breakneck pace nowadays.
I don't think it would be much of a big deal for current owners. If they are going for a smaller form factor, and a cheaper price, Apple usually makes some important differences between the models. The $99 price point would grab the people who haven't wanted to spend the money thus far, but there would probably be something stripped out of it compared to bigger models.
CNBC was "rumoring" this last week. I still haven't seen any confirmation, leaked or otherwise, though. Maybe it'll be like the Shuffle and let random calls come through? I'm sure people would flock to that.
Hey, what if it had a keyboard?! It'd be funny if they tout that as new and innovative! Or maybe it'll be able to send attachments in emails or send SMS messages like just about all of the competition (ugh)! Excuse sarcasm...
You are right about this. Rumors also have iPhone Nano being without WiFi, pre-loaded iTunes and the App Store, as all apps are formatted for 3G and EDGE's screen dimensions. So, iPhone Nano would just have the phone functions, iPod and Safari with 4GB.
I doubt you will ever see a keyboard on an iPhone. As far as the other stuff...meh. I miss MMS (which I'm guessing you meant) and hope that gets rectified. But everything else that I would see as a negative is overshadowed by the awesomeness of the App Store. Didn't you get an iPhone, DoD? Maybe that wasn't you... I'm still not completely sure how 'solid' these rumors are, but yes that would make sense. Though if leaving Safari in I would think the wifi might stay, but who knows...
D'oh! Yes, I meant MMS. If it didn't have SMS, I doubt I would've gotten it. Hehe. Yes, I got an iPhone - I didn't want all the Mac dorks to say I was talking out of my butt when I knocked it. Actually I like the phone except for the lack of MMS and the fact for some reason when I send emails with pics (and maybe without, too), it gets sent about 20 times. I have a Yahoo account I use and other peope seem to have this problem with the iPhone and Yahoo, too. That is quite annoying for the receiving party... the interface is awesome and so are many of the apps. That is its saving grace. I hope they add MMS sometime soon via firmware/software update... soooo annoying not to be able to send a dang pic to a phone. And then let us be able to attach documents to emails!!
I'm personally kind of glad iPhone does not support MMS. I get tired of people sending me stupid chain texts with some stupid gif.. Nearly everyone I want to bother sending pics to has a phone capable of viewing email OR they are usually near a computer enough (who isn't?) to see what I send them in a reasonable amount of time.
Truthfully, I've never had this problem with emails, nor have I ever heard of it. And since I'm sure you'll ask, I run GMail. Never had a problem with it on either 3G or the EDGE I used to rock. My one gripe.....no copy/paste, otherwise I would have posted the concept photos/leaks of iPhone Nano that are up on MacRumors right now, in this thread. I'll prolly do this when I get to the office....
If that works for you, then congrats. But don't try to justify it for everyone. Believe me, there is a segment of society that isn't always near email, doesn't spend $200-$400 on cell phones and have a life away from computers. At worst, make it an option to turn it off. Duh. It is flat out a weakness in the phone.
Copy and paste isn't as big an issue to me although I do think a phone this expensive (that touts its interface) not having it is silly. When I bought it, I thought I could get by with no attachments/MMS, but it gets old when people walking around with $99 or so phones ask you "you paid that much and I can't send you a pic straight to your phone? My $0 freebie phone does that!" lol.
What plagues me is that a jailbroken iPhone does support MMS. When I had my Edge iPhone with T-mobile it was awesome. When the 3g came out I made the switch and I can't say I'm 100% happy with it. I'm paying more per month, I have faster internet, but the bare essentials of communication are limited. Texts frequently disappear, phone calls get dropped all the time, and sometimes the internet just doesn't work. I think the first gen was a lot more reliable, but the 3g is so fast it kinda makes up for what it lacks. Don't even get me started on the battery issues.
Its pretty much an inevitability though that MMS is going to be outdated or impractical in terms of sending media to people as smart phones become more affordable. I feel comfortable saying that the amount of people demanding MMS is shrinking, while the amount of people with easy access to email is growing.. and I think a lot of phone developers are thinking the same thing.
