I've seen a few people ask about the next generation of consoles here and there. Seemed strange, but if you think about it, this generation of consoles have been on the market for a while. The 360 is coming up on its 5th year, while the PS3 and Wii are approaching 4 years. For reference, there was about 4 years between the release of the Xbox and the release of the 360, 5 for the GC and Wii, and 6 years from PS2 to PS3. If we were to assume a similar time frame for the next generation of consoles, it wouldn't be surprising to expect something pretty soon about a new console, maybe releasing in 2011-2012.

Of course, that actually seems rather unlikely at this point. Each console has been doing relatively well in recent years, and we keep getting exciting new games pretty regularly. Perhaps it would be more likely to expect something in 2013-2014? Up to 9 years after the "start" of the generation?

And do we care? Still got lots of great new games coming, which are continuing to push the technical capabilities of these consoles. And I would expect lots of great games still to come. In fact, one of my favorite developers hasn't even put out a game for this generation of consoles, so I'm definitely eager to see what they can do. Hearing about a new console now would just seem...way too early.

But maybe I'm in the minority. I was thinking that the DS could probably still go for another year or so, but Nintendo definitely thought otherwise (though I also think Sony could use a new PSP right about now, and it probably makes sense that we'd need a "successor" to the DS as well). What do you guys think? And what would you expect out of this new generation? Hopefully not $70 games (unless you're Bobby Kotick).

And yes, the Wii is maybe a bit of an exception here. In some ways, I think it isn't really any different from the 360/PS3, but in others (technical specifications), I could maybe see there being a greater desire to see a next-gen version of it. I'm kind of split on it personally.

Wii is like the Darko of this generation's consoles. What a huge let down. If I didn't spend so much money on it, I would've smashed it into smithereens and burned it to hell. I don't think I'll be getting anymore nintendo products in the foreseeable future (the cube was a POS as well).

I really want to get a 360, though. I hope they won't come out with a new console any time soon as I'm always a step behind.

I don't have any desire for new consoles to come out. It's not like the consoles before where things started to get a little stale. They seem to find new ways of pushing these systems further and further now a days.

Plus, and just my opinion, but I don't think Sony or Microsoft would be putting so much into both the Kinect and Move if there was any thought of these systems starting to get "over the hill".

Whats his face at Sony said the next batch of consoles would run for 10yrs. Closer to ten than 5 seems about right.

I am not sure the a new-gen PSP could compete with phones for many people. It would be a smaller market then when the PSP was first released.

the current gen of consoles are just now making a direct profit right? I think it is pretty obvious they will not be replaced any time soon.

The big 3 are nuts to bring out a new console now. Bad economy for it.

The current consoles have plenty of life left, especially if the PS3 brings the firmware that allows 3D.

I'm not sure what could be improved upon for a next generation. They seem to be incorporating the newest stuff into the current systems. I have no desire for a new generation, I am quite happy with what I have now

    No way, not yet.

I remember how blown away I was by GTA3, and then Vice City, and then San Andreas, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, FFXII, etc. until the whole thing culminated in God of War 2, all for the PS2.

As time went on, the developers really figured out how to harness that bad little machine, and we've seen this same steady progression on PS3.

I haven't bought a PS3 yet, but I have a hard time imagining why you couldn't get another several years out of it. The 360 (as far as I know) is awesome and has continued this progression as well, though I could see MS doing something before Sony re: RROD, no BluRay, not to mention that the 360 had a year head-start.

I'd say Sony has to be looking at another few years for their current console.

TV's can not handle resolutions that PC's can put out there, or at least most of them.

I doubt we see a new console for at least 2 more years.

Wow, that's a lot of hate. The Wii has its place in gaming, and does its job very well. Also, the Wii is pretty cheap, so I can't really see how you ended up spending so much money on it. I'm just disappointed that the Wii doesn't have an HDMI output.

On another note: has Sony stopped working on the PSP? I never see it around anymore.

Well in the past the cost of a console stayed around 200 bucks, maybe 300. This generation was quite a bit more at launch, so I guess they were made to last longer than the previous gen consoles.

Yeah I'm ready, but will I be ready to pay for any of them? haha

My PC is next gen enough.

no because I am a poor college student with a PS3 and don't want to spend money on a new console any time soon.

I have a feeling Nintendo is going to strike first and possibly release their new console next year if the 3DS is released this fall. This way, the hand held sales won't cannibalize the console sales and if successful, give Nintendos brand hype through two consecutive years. If the 3DS is released this fall, Kinect/Move will be a after thought in the minds of consumers.

I would like to know how much Nintendo plans on pricing the 3DS. If it's up to $249, I think it could sell out and be the hottest Christmas gift this year. Like all Nintendo hand helds, I'll probably wait until they release their improved model one or two years later.

If you look at the list of upcoming games for all the systems, MS and Nintendo don't have many big budget titles left. This leads me to believe their next gen system is coming sooner rather than later.

Maybe it sounds too practical common man approach, but I'd rather a console that they max out in specs (N64) until there's limitations, rather than leaving behind all kinds of untapped console capability if its there. If it somehow happened that the Dreamcast was capable of rendering the same exact games we have now, you might think whats the point in a new console then? But I'm not one of those guys that trades out his car every 3 years....

If the industry provided options old and new, like PS2 along with PS3, then sure give the hardcores something and the "settlers" something. Since most tech industries can't operate like that (90% current-gen focus) and since people start looking at their hardware in contempt after seeing new updated splashy graphics on new consoles, looks like the game makers will release a console whenever they feel they can be "epic" and win, even if it disrupts the symbiotic consumer/producer relationship.
