Sorry to start another ref scandal thread, but I wanted to do a poll, so I had to. Everyone keeps talking about how the scandal has jeopardized the future of the NBA, and I have to wonder if it is true. Will fans really attend fewer games, buy less merchandise, visit the website less often, watch the games on TV less often, etc., because a ref fixed some games the last 2 years?

I thought about that, but since I'm asking Rockets fans about their cosumption, I figured it was Rockets-related.

Yea I was thinking of starting one of these but it may be biased here because we are all hardcore fans.

For me it really depends on how big this scandal is. If it's just one ref I don't think anything will change with me but I will suspect others being involved. If it comes out the players and coaches are also involved then I will probably lose quite a bit of interest in the NBA.

Edit: I didn't vote on it because I don't know yet.

World-wide their will be less interest, short-term of course. Me, I see no change as they really were, for most part isolated incidents, I hope...

This ref may have only effected a few lines remember, not who won/lost actual games, which far more important...

    But, who knows yet...

1! Yes, I'll actually probably watch more because of this. Why?
I'd say there's no change, but I don't think that's true. This is the biggest story to hit professional sports... ever. Referees in basketball have more power than in any other sport (which is what places this above the same scandal that hit an Italian soccer league). Fact is, I'll watch more just because I'll be watching games I don't care about just to see what is done about the officiating. Normally, I'd just watch Rockets and mavericks games (I've been living there. Shut it). But now, I'll watch anything on ESPN/TNT. And while this may wane, for the time it lasts, I will be watching more.

Considering I rarely watch the NBA anyway outside of Rockets games, I doubt this will effect me much. After last playoffs, unless the Rockets are in it, I won't even watch that.

You are polling people, who in the middle of a work day in the summer, are reading a basketball board...you realize this right?

If players and coaches are involved, I think NBA is over.

I don't care about REfs, officials, they are bad anyways. Crawfords might have done more damage to NBA integrity.

I don't know about Basketball refs having the most power out of the other sports. Baseball comes to mind when I think about that. The Umps can throw players out just for questioning if that was really a strike.

No change. In fact, this season will be under so much scrutiny this will probably be the most 'legit' year ever.

A lot of "No change" answers. I wonder how much/if the response would differ if the question were posed to casual fans (i.e. those that don't check out basketball forums, esp. in the offseason :D )...

no change, the players control their own destiny not the refs, as much as we b**** about the refs making bad calls 99.99999% of all games aren't fixed

Besides the already abnormal time I spend reading about the Rockets, now I am reading about this scandal. So yes, I would say it has increased my interest.

No change given the story as I understand it now.

But if we find out it's far more expansive than this....well...then, we'll see. I have no interest in watching pro wrestling.

It's not like this is some shocking event. I'm surprised something like this hasn't happened already. Remember JVG taking that $100,000 fine after the infamous game5. How does he feel now!?
