In 2003 AT&T built "secret rooms" hidden deep in the bowels of its central offices in various cities, housing computer gear for a government spy operation which taps into the company's popular WorldNet service and the entire internet. These installations enable the government to look at every individual message on the internet and analyze exactly what people are doing. Documents showing the hardwire installation in San Francisco suggest that there are similar locations being installed in numerous other cities.

AT&T provided National Security Agency eavesdroppers with full access to its customers' phone calls, and shunted its customers' internet traffic to data-mining equipment installed in a secret room in its San Francisco switching center, according to a former AT&T worker cooperating in the Electronic Frontier Foundation's lawsuit against the company.

    Yes, this is really happening.

    Unbelievable.

To borrow-Too Late Baby by Carole King- edited

Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time
There’s something wrong here, there can be no denying
World is changing, and maybe you've started spying

And it’s too late, baby, now it’s too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can’t hide
And I just can’t escape it

It used to be so easy living in the U.S.
You were liberty and freedom and I knew just what to do
Now you look in my computer, and I feel like a fool

And it’s too late, baby, now it’s too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can’t hide
And I just can’t escape it

There’ll be bad times ahead for me and you
But we just can’t stay private, don’t you feel it too
Still I’m glad for what we had, and how I once loved you

But it’s too late, baby, it’s too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can’t hide
And I just can’t escape it

    :D

I've read conspiracy theories that ever since the invention of open key encryption (40-50 years ago), the rush was on the English and possibly American government to record all forms of communication on its people. Encrypted codes are hard to break without any clues. Using a brute force attack it would've taken more than 20 years to break a 128 bit key on one single message. Open key made it easily accessible to everyone while not having an "enigma machine" to crack it.

Given Google's amazing efforts to buy serverhouses and track the internet, it's not that hard to believe that the government doesn't have time and resources to do so.

As for the reasons they've done this, the existing enemies are probably more savvy than said conspiracy theorists and it's obvious everything can't be prevented without critically placed human intelligence.

So what we're left with is a lot of intelligence on innocent citizens.

The Idea that our government would not spy on us
    is just crazy

If governments CAN do it. . they generally do
esp if they can do it in a way that is covert
