Are there any players like Jeff Hornacek out there anymore?

What I mean is a deadly spot up shooter. Player that can simply catch and shoot and make about 80%+ of their wide opened 18 footers. There were plenty back in the 80s-90's with guys like Rolando Blackman, Jim Paxson, Byron Scott, Danny Ainge etc.

Reason why I say this is that this is type of player or players we need surrounding Yao. More and more teams are going to double/triple him and without this type of supporting cast, even if we do play INSIDE OUT BALL, our outside isnt much of a threat.

Mobley had a great game last night and I give him props. But he is still a much better slasher (creating his own shot type player) than the traditional spot up shooter. Albeit, it is POSSIBLE for players like he and Francis to change their games but after playing this way for over 5 years in the NBA now, it is not likely to happen any time soon.

The thing that set Horny apart was not necessarily his jump shooting, but the fact that he could throw some wierd stuff that seemed to always go in.

Comparing Hornacek to Pike is really underestimating Hornacek. The guy can score from ANYWHERE on the floor, cut to the basket for easy layups, and can dribble past his men only to put up a mid-ranged jumper and not having to face the opposing big man.

I hate the Jazz, but always respected Hornacek. Maybe it's because I didn't see him flop as much. Than again, I probably just forgot. I'm not sure about comparisons today. I mean, there are shooters of his caliber, but they're all stars rather than role players.

I think Mobley's fine in the SG spot. If I were to upgrade the team, I'm not sure Mobley -> Hornacek-like player is needed.

Horny's high arching running hooks were some of the craziest shots i've ever seen a player take.... but they always went in!!!!!!!

Yeah.. I am just sick of teams double and tripling Yao with no recourse in place.

This is kinda off to a tangent but lets start list a group of role players active and past that may mesh the best with Yao.

    Current

    yao
    boozer
    AK47
    Ray Allen
    Steve Nash

    Past

    Yao
    Oakely/Thorpe/Ho Grant
    Horry/Mullin
    Hornacek/Blackman
    Stockton/Mark Price

some of you may disagree but i would say bones barry. for the last couple years barry has been in the top 3-point field goal % and has been one of the highest fg% shooting 2-guards. horny was still much better on offense but by today's standards possibly the closest thing is barry. they are also similar because their court sense allows them to create their own shots, like horny wouldn't even have to look at the hoop before shooting bc he would use court markings as point of reference. barry does this on athletic drives, while horny would do it off picks at the 3 point line. horny had an amazing runner in the lane.

Still Hornacek was a better slasher than Cat. It is not to say Hornacek was more explosive, but he knew how to run the court and always got easy layups. Of course, he had Stockton feeding him the ball.

I know how much we Rox fans dislike Jazz, but Stockton/Hornacek type of guard combinations would be perfect for Yao.

JJ Redick from Duke looks to me like he'll be that type of player. Also Heinrich and maybe Brent Barry.

I dunno. Do you have to be white to make this list or something?

Don't forget the former Chris Jackson from LSU also known as Abdul-Rauf. That dude could get his shot off with the defender in his lap and knock it down. One of the quickest and most accurate releases I've seen on a jumpshot.

The players like Hornacek now are players like Dunleavy and the Euros. Basically anyone with shooting skill. Most of them are going prety high in the draft because they possess the skills that most American raised players dont come close to having.

hmmm... Dunleavy is too fundamental and picture perfect... what separate Jeff from the other white people who can shoot the midrange jump and long range jumper is the quirky way he goes to the basket and the way he finishes.

So... to sum it up... I would be a player likes jeff.. cuz I have a lot of wtf finishes that go in... I can shoot the midrange jumper consistently(and make them).. although I like to step into my shots better...
and I am starting to be very consistent at 3-pt shots too... I also get by people without too much quickness or speed. I have a long face also.
