This article does a good job of breaking down the lineup if it stays the same for next season. It says that the Astros are serious about adding a big bat to the linuep? From the roster breakdown, it sounds like they aren't willing to give up anybody. The Stros have to understand that in order to get a quality hitter, they are going to have to give up a quality player. No MLB team in their right mind would give up one of their primary offensive players for a middle relief pitcher or some other player not even close to their talent level. Don't get me wrong, I would hate to see any of the current Astros go, however, if someone has to leave to make this team better then so be it. What to ya'll think?

Where do you get that? I'd prefer to listen to this:

I believe they understand this considering the rumors over the last week or so have mentioned Brad Lidge.

    And Mike Lamb!

[sarcasm] Man, we're lucky that the Stros were able squeeze Lamb's signing in before the end of the offseason. No more deals can be made as of tonight, right? [/sarcasm]

It can be argued that last year's "bad" offseason led directly to a World Series. We know for a fact that the moves that were/weren't made last year allowed the Astros to make their first World Series ever. Anything else would be pure speculation.

I'll judge this year's offseason (about 2 more months of it) in September 2006.

In all seriousness, I'm glad to see we re-signed Lamb and for relatively cheap ($1.7 mill).

For some reason I feel disgusted from a team that just came off a finish in the World Series. It was an ugly finish to the season though, and it looks like it will be two offseasons without any significant signings. This time there won't be no Roger Clemens is coming back to save the day like last year though.

If McClain thinks this team can go back to the post season with the same lineup, even if Roger was back, then he must be smoking something real strong!

Why not? Burke and Taveras have an extra year of experience and Berkman wont miss a significant portion of time at the start of the season. We may be a weak hitting team, but overall, the Astros are still solid. Afterall, this is the same team that made it to the World Series.

I'd say our priority should be signing one or two quality starting pitchers, unless you guys are happy with Wandy and Zeke pitching 40 percent of our games.

For some reason, I actually think we are going to do something big this off-season or in spring training.

Too many people seem to have blind faith in Purpura's abilities. The simple fact is he is not a tested GM and has yet to pull off a move. If Hunsicker was here I would have complete confidence that something would get done. However, with Timmy I'm still waiting......

    Prove me wrong Tim. :)

I agree fully with that, but until then, maybe those big names do not always pan out. Who are some of the big signings last year? Beltran? Finley? Renteria? Beltre? Pavano? Sexson? Glaus? Benitez? Percival?

Those were most of the big-name free agents that made a splash in last year's offseason. Some of them are names that we complained that we didn't make much of an effort for, mostly because of Beltran. With the exception of Beltran making a full comeback (which is still a stretch because of his regular season stats), I really don't see any of them worth 40% of the money they are or will earn. Staying put doesn't always mean it's bad. Spending an obscene amount of money on a player that lives by the name could be potentially damaging, regardless of how easy MMP is to hit at. These people have to analyse everything, it's not just throw money and hope for the biggest name to bite and hope it pans out. The Astros just went through 2 of their best playoff runs ever!

why does everyone continue to speak of purpura, as if he has any say in what moves the stros make/do not make. Drayton controls everything...why do you think gerry stepped down?

Drayton won't do anything significant in the offseason, the astros will have another "miracle" season in which they make it to the playoffs playing "small/sissy" ball, only to abandon this strategy when it matters most......the WORLD SERIES! Thanks Crapiron!

yes sir, if u are happy with finishing second place regardless if it was the best season in franchise history then you have limited ambitions. Look at the Marlins, Angels, and Diamondbacks in their first years of playing at the WS. I want more as a fan. Going back to the WS is very difficult.

Yes I am judging the offseason in December based on what has happened before, until they prove me wrong then that will be another story.
