A line-up of Francis, Mobley, Rice and MoT, teams won't exactly be sweatin when its time to score. Ming can't clean up EVERYONE'S garbage (if he can at that).

So are we just gonna outscore everyone?

We're light on defense, agreed. But it's kind of convenient how you left out Griffin.

Not to mention KT, T-Mo and Cato -- none of whom are stellar defenders, but each of whom has some defensive talent.

And if we ever go with the unlikely shotblocking lineup of Cato, Ming and Griffin...

I think you greatly underestimate the impact a 7'5" shotblocker will have on the defense.

Not only does it limit lay-ins from the opposing team, but it increases the effectiveness of our perimeter defenders, because Perimeter defense, in my opinion, is simply a function of who you have behind you.

    I wouldn't say we're the new Ma'vs, I'd say we're the new Rockets.

No they should be better than them. Francis is and will be better thank nash, cat and finley are equal. Dirk has a big advantage over Bosjan and rice, We have a better 4, and 5. You say we will be like them becuase of defensive reasons please. the back courts are simulat in defrense, but our front court is a lot better. If the mavs had our front court they would be champions right now. If we had the mavs back court we would be the same. Do you see where i'm getting at? We are a naturally better team than Dallas is now. All we need is chemistry.

    "cat and finley are equal"

Not quite. Finley had an off year last year but he is a step above Cat. Cat potentially (like our entire team) is as good as Finley but to say he is a sgood as Finley I don't buy it.
Also if you compare them look at more than last years stats.

I don't think its given that you are a good defender just because you are 7'6 ... sure he should block some shots but so does cato ... for him to be efficient he also needs to play good positional defense and be a dominant rebounder neither which comes automatic just by beeing 7'6 ... if he isn't good/great defensivly you haven't got anything special since there are quite afew scoring centers in the league ... if he is is a great defender then you can just :D

No the Rockets won't be the next Mavs. They are more balanced than the Mavs.

Suppose the Mavs have Griffin and Yao on their squad minus Najera, Bradley and Lafrentz, they will be a completely different team. Griffin will be better than Najera, and Yao is better than Bradley and Lafrentz combined. There is no comparison between the front court potential of the Rockets' and the Mavs'.

We'd have to win 50 games before we become the new Mavs...

Remember the good old days when 50 games were a given. That was not too long ago.

Well, if they follow their example, the Rockets could be the 'new' Celtics, i.e. a team of athletic players, but weak individual defenders, that decide to change their approach to team defense and in turn become one of the better defensive teams in the league.

Ditto for the Mavs, it's all about the team concept.

EXACTLY! It is all about the TEAM defense.

Forget the Mavs of new. What about the Mavs of old? They dominated us for 5 years straight in the 80s and early 90s
