The Lakers, Kings, Spurs, and Mavericks are virtually assured playoffs spots. So, that leaves the Clippers, Rockets, Seattle, Jazz, Blazers, Suns, Grizzleys, and Wolves fighting for the last four playoff spots. Denver and the Warrirors have basically little chance of playing for a playoff spot.

The Complete teams trying to make the playoffs from 1 to 5 are the Rockets, Clippers, Blazers, and Grizzleys.

The teams with MVP candidates are the Wolves (Garnett), Rockets (Francis), Seattle (Payton), and the Clippers (Odom).

The veteran teams are the Jazz and the Blazers.

Teams with playoff experience are the Jazz, the Blazers, Seattle, and the Wolves.

Rockets; solid core 1 to 5, with MVP Francis, yet inexpericenced.
Clippers; solid core 1 to 5, with MVP Odom, with experience.
Seattle; not solid 1 to 5, with MVP Payton, solid experience.
Suns; solid core 1 to 5, no true MVP, with a little experience.
Blazers; solid core 1 to 5, no true MVP, wit a lot of experience.
Grizzleys; solid core 1 to 5, no true MVP, yet inexperienced.
Wolves; not solid 1 to 5, with MVP Garnet, with a lot of experience
Jazz; not solid 1 to 5, Stockton @ Malone, a lot of experience.

So, can the Rockets overcome the lack of playoff experience? Can the Rockets young guns gain enough confidence to help Mobley, Taylor, and Francis? And will Mobley and Francis be the leaders that the Rockets need?

Gezz, I hear a lot of Rockets fan say that if the Rockets don't make the playoff, this season was a waste! But why? The competition will be fierce. And let's not forget that Griffin, Yao, and Nachbar will be rookies or 1 year romoved teenagers. Let's be realistic and realize that the WEst is tough. Portland, the Jazz, the Wolves, Seattle, the Suns, the Clippers also have good teams that a lot of people are high on.

But, I hope the Rockets do make the playoffs. But if they fight and come short, it's not the end of the franchise.

i think me and just about every other rocket fan thinks that we have a really good chance of making the playoffs. i wouldnt say we are a lock but i would pick us ove the clippers. Francis will have a good year but saying he will when MVP is a stretch. He will be an allstar. He will become a true point guard. H will be the the best PG in the league. But he will not win the MVP(this year).

I cant wait till the season starts great things to come in H-Town!!!!

Steve to MIng ohh how sweet it is!!!!

By the way my picks for the West are:

    1. Lakers-Shaq and Kobe, 3 peat, nuff said
    2. Kings-They kept the team together
    3. Spurs-Duncan is the most complete player
    4. Mavs-so much offense, little defense
    5. Portland-Sabonis will definatley help, deep team.
    6. Rockets-Francis and Yao might drive them up higher
    7. Clippers-boy, that team is so complete for 1 more year?
    8. Wolves-Garnett isn't the 30 point scorer that team needs
    9. Jazz-Malone and Stockton without reloading, bleak future
    10. Sonics-Payton is bickering already
    11. Suns-Marbury hasn't proven anything in his career
    12. Grizzleys-Williams will not be their point guard for long
    13. Golden State-No identity, still frowning over Carter trade
    14. Denver-they want to be bad for a chance at prep star

CR, I think that Francis will definatley be considered for an MVP if the Rockets win. Finally, everyone will see what we see every game that Francis plays.

20 points, 7 assits, 7 rebounds, above the rim game. MVP calibur. And the league will start the debates.

I think Francis will actually do better then the stats your saying and yes he is MVP calibur but look at jason kidd last year! AMAZING SEASON he led the nets yes the NETS to the nba finals and he still didnt get MVP. who did get the MVP? i gut that left the playoffs in a 2nd round.

I pretty much agree with these rankings, but Odom is no MVP candidate. I am very optimistic that the Rockets will make the playoffs.

I think the rockets can go any where from 4-9. this year will be a different one because of the worldwide attention we will be getting some players will step up to the spotlight which could be very good. and dare i say it.... with all the attention the rockets will get maybe the cat will be seen nationally as the all-star we all know he is of course he wouldnt start as an allstar(kobe) but i think he could make the all star team... GO ROCKETS!

This is getting serious!!! Prophets are making
predictions for 03 Playoffs. Lets have some patience and be calm about the Rox future! Their future depends upon on how the chemistry works out, especially in the transfer from a Guard oriented team to a Center oriented team. We will get some idea during the preseason games and begin to feel like what to expect from the Rox. By GAME 5 the big surprise should be creeping on the news as we realise that we are 5-0 and on our way!! Lets all hope for the best!!

Yes, definitely the Rockets will be in the playoffs. They'll move ahead of Seattle and Utah and will end up better than the Clips if Brand and Odom don't recover quickly from injury.

As to whether the Rockets have or have not had a successful season if they don't make the playoffs:

    1) The Rockets have had 3 very high (numerically low) Lottery picks in the 3 succesive years.

    2) Owner Les Alexander has been quoted as saying this is one of the best teams ever assembled.

    Anything less is uncivilized. :D

I absolutely hate saying this but...

IMO, there is no way on this planet the Clippers make the playoffs and the Jazz do not. The Jazz are a team while the Clippers are an assemblage of talent. And if you've been reading the papers lately, some potentially very disgruntled talent.
