Simple question. Do you feel The Beatles are the greatest musical act of all-time? I'm talking all-time. Mozart. They Might Be Giants. Five Iron Frenzy. Are they the greatest band ever? I was for or five years old and sitting in the bathtub at my dad's when I first heard Rocky Raccoon. That moment marks the point at which I became a music fan. I believe they're undoubtedly the greatest of all-time.
between "YES" and "NO" I chose yes, and I like Led Zeppelin even better than the Beatles as well. go figure.
I voted yes before I read your qualifier. The Beatles are not greater than Mozart. But they are the greatest band of all time.
There are other artist I like more but if anyone could lay claim to being the greatest I'd say it would be the beatles based on musical growth, experimentation and influence.
Do you feel The Beatles are the greatest musical act of all-time? In terms of sales, The Beatles are. In terms of cultural impact, The Beatles are. In terms of influencing other bands, The Beatles are on the short list. In terms of the music itself, The Beatles are on the short list for pop artists. In terms of live performances, The Beatles are not.
greatest? i say yes, w/o a doubt. but i listen to a lot of bands more than i do the beatles, so they are nowhere near my favorite.
I've found that blanket "greatest of all time" or "greatest ever" declarations are best avoided. IMO, the Beatles are probably the most influential pop/rock band of all time. Their music planted the seeds for virtually every genre of pop and rock. (Hold Your Hand -->Hey Bulldog-->Tomorrow Never Knows) Then Zeppelin came along and did the same for rock. (Tangerine -->Gallows Pole-->Kashmir) Personally, I would rather listen to Zeppelin than Beatles given the choice, but I enjoy them both on the iPod. I think it's a fair statement that no band has matched either Zep or Beatles since in influence or innovation. Pink Floyd could be debated, but they were more grounded into a particular sound.
With exception to the fact that I greatly prefer The Beatles to Led Zeppelin (and I love me some Zep), I think your argument goes without saying. But The Beatles get this automatic rap for being the greatest band ever, and I was curious what other people thought. As far as influence, it's not Beatles or Zeppelin level, but don't discount Green Day's influence. They basically created the modern pop punk genre, a genre from which countless current bands have drawn influence.
I'd like to disagree. While I am not the biggest Nirvana fan in the world, I do like their music and their innovation single handedly killed hair bands all the while igniting one of the biggest genres of music today. Their influence is heard in many different styles of music and noted so by many, many varying artists. The lasting impacts of Nirvana is immeasurable. Nobody will confuse Nirvana with the Beatles, but they do match them in terms of innovation and especially influence.
A qualified yes. I don't think you can lump the Beatles and other popular music with Mozart and the like. They're both music, but the artistic aims are too disparate for comparison.
If they would have stayed together and not broke up, and with out John Lennon dying. Would they have been thought of as so great? I really don't think so.
Seriously speaking... Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, are just two, just to name a few that should be up there. Also, Susan Boyle.
