Are self-righteous anger and a sense of humor mutually exclusive?

I noticed that angry people, including religious extremists, do not seem to have the ability to laugh about themselves. Making self-deprecating jokes does not seem to be one of their abilities. They seem to take everything very seriously (themselves especially), and most of it makes them angry. On the other hand, when people are able to take a little joke and also some ribbing at their expense, they don't get angry that easily, or if they do, a laugh often defuses the situation.

While I think about it, Jewish humor is famous in the world. Are there other religious groups that are known for similar qualities?

It just seems that people who are able to laugh at themselves are much less likely to be violent whereas those who easily get angry and are violence-prone do not seem to have much of a sense of humor at all.

Would you agree with that observation or am I on the wrong track?

Exactly ;) - in the dark times of Germany, the fanatics were not exactly known for appreciating jokes at their expense.

    Rashmon: Not bad, not bad.

But I am talking in general - not about any specific people or religions (other than the Jewish one, which is famous for its humor).

Well, but there are some black comedians who make fantastic jokes at everyone's, but also at "their own people's" expense...we even have one of those on the board here. Or Chris Rock, etc. etc. I don't think they all had money and power when they started.

I think a self depricating sense of humor is mutually exclusive to someone who is self righteous, but there are other types of humor.

Maybe, but take it from us, plain righteous anger and humor are not mutually exclusive and in fact can work very well together.

There's definitely a correlation, I think. Super serious people aren't gonna laugh at themselves.

It's all about the ebb and flow of time -- why I remember once when Germans were quite mad -- about everything.
