Both are great bands... but I have not heard as much Bloc Party that I liked.. Arctic Monkeys are one of my fav's. Maybe The Strokes V AM would be better tho.
bloc party sucks imo. I saw them once open for the NY dolls and they didn't walk the walk. Have you heard that crime against humanity called "Mercury? wow....
Bloc Party had so much promise. Silent Alarm was epic. But then they went out and made two terrible albums in a row. I mean Weekend in the City was one of the worst albums I have heard in this entire genre. Their new album Intimacy had a few good tracks, but overall 80% crap. Arctic Monkeys on the other hand is one band that has lived up to their hype. Anything that Alex Turner touches is gold. Have you checked out their new album "Humbug"? Pretty solid stuff. Even Turner's side project The Last Shadow Puppets was one of the best albums of last year.
Brightside I think we have very similar tastes in music. I agree Turner's solo stuff was very solid and I have loved everything AM has put out. Silent Alarm was the only good Bloc Party album no question. Like I said a Stokes/Arctic Monkeys comparison is much better... Arctic Monkeys took a lot of stuff from what the Strokes did and I for one would have a tough tough time picking which one is better as they are both two of my favorite bands.
Arctic Monkeys are solid. I didn't know their newest was out already, but I have the two before it. I haven't decided yet if I like their newest single, but I'm sure the album won't disappoint. I'll also have to check out the other group you mentioned. Bloc Party are ok, I have their first album, but even with that one I only listen to a handful of songs. This is another one really not all that close. Strokes probably would've been better vs AM. For the record though, I'd go with The Strokes. On the topic of Brit bands. Have yous guys listened to The Zutons? I have one of their songs on my Touch and its fantastic. I may go and get that album just to see.
I torrented a prerelease of Humbug just now... giving it a listen through. The Crying Lighting single kind of sets the tone for this album as it is much darker than the first two. I think it will grow on me but I am not displeased... its just different.
Julian Casablancas (lead singer of The Strokes) is releasing a solo album in a few months actually. I heard a small sample of it on Youtube, and it sounds interesting. All the guys from The Strokes have a side project going on, but I think the best of the bunch is from Nikolai Fraiture in his band Nickel Eye. Check it out if you have a chance. Its more acoustic type music but very nice. I think The Strokes have influenced more British bands then American bands to be honest. Bigger acts like Arctic Monkeys started out with those great guitar riffs and solo's. Other bands in Britain that sound similar to The Strokes include Bombay Bicycle Club, Cajun Dance Party, Lo Fi Culture Scene, The Maccabees, Boy Kill Boy amongst others. The really cool thing is the average age of all these band members is like 18 years old. The British indie scene really embraces younger acts, something which you rarely see in the States.
Sums it up. However, 2 bad-to-very-bad albums later, and This Modern Love still moves me. Monkeys achieved the very dificult task of improving on their sophomore album, and Whatever was already very good, though very british-y in lingo. I havent seen Bloc Party live but you can imagine from the music alone that the Arctic Monkeys puts on a more intense show. Theyre playing here again in October, but tickets are like 30$. I wouldnt warrant a Strokes/Monkeys comparison either. I havent listened to Humbug yet, so maybe they went in a weird direction like First Impressions and they do indeed make a better comparison.
Agree with the general consensus here. Silent Alarm was great, but Bloc Party hasn't done anything worth mentioning since. Arctic Monkeys are simply awesome.
If you pick Arctic Monkeys you are a fool. They were "supposed" to be the new sound but ended up fitting in like the rest. Bloc Party is the real deal
I voted for Bloc Party because I guess I am one of those rare people that liked both Silent Alarm and Weekend in the City and Intimacy wasn't that bad (although clearly their worst album so far). Just recently got the Arctic Monkeys first 2 albums but I haven't gotten to listen to them yet - I need to do that soon.
I voted Bloc Party. I like Silent Alarms and most of Weekend in the City. The few songs I heard of Intimacy on their myspace didnt sound so good so I didnt bother getting it. I was never a big fan of Arctic Monkeys.
I'd say the albums go something like this. 1. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm 2. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not 3. Arctic Monkeys - Humbug 4. Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare 5. Bloc Party - Weekend in the City 6. Bloc Party - Intimacy I give the nod to Arctic Monkeys, especially since I have a lot more confidence they'll continue to make decent music. Josh Homme producing Humbug seemed like a pretty good match, can definitely hear the QOTSA influence.
I used to like Bloc Party quite a bit -but at some point I just got completely sick of them -- I'll probably get back into them again someday. I had the Arctic Monkeys first album and it's not bad -but I just stopped playing it after a while and forgot about the band.
I made a BP vs AM thread instead of strokes vs AM because BP and AM are from the same era. I think it is not right to compare Strokes to AM because the Strokes are an older band, and AM were influenced by them. BP and AM are a better comparison because they blew up around a similar time, and have some similar influences, however they did not influence each other, making it a mroe fair comparison. I say that BP are much more experimental, and I lvoe drum and bass and electro (which they toy with), however I don't htink they pull it off so well. AM is a much more consistent band, however they're afraid to try anything new. Possibly for good reason as they are great as they are. I had know idea that Josh Homme produced the new AM album. WOW, that is great. I love QOTSA.
