The Arab league suspended Syria. Now they are drawing up plans for political and economic sanctions. This may open the door to allowing the USA to intervene again with fighter jets. I am all for intervention to prevent a government from slaughtering it's own people. I think it's been a long time coming. Of course, it could end up really bad if the opposition government is more violent than the current administration.
Because of Libya, there won't be military intervention in Syria. The Arab League, Russia and China won't allow it. Plus, Syria is a completely different animal.
Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the planet and has never been destroyed. It will happen one day since ALL the prophecies in the Bible come to pass.
So Syria has to forfeit all of their games this season? Seem unfair to their players and fans just cuz Assad is a dick.
That's good, but when it comes to military intervention, can't the Arab League do it by themselves? I mean, we hand out all this military aid; don't they have the equipment by now to gang up on one country without us yet?
That could be a probelm, I don't think any of their players are suited for the DH spot, plus their pitcher is a decent hiter, he's wasting half of his talent sitting down on offense.
One, the invasion of Kuwait was a long time ago. Two, they don't need to have an Arab League force. Each of these countries has their own army. If they want military intervention, they have tanks they can roll in. They can come through Turkey or Jordan. It made some sense for Western intervention in Libya because it isn't terribly close to Arab powers (besides Egypt, which wasn't in a position to do much at the moment), and it was close to Italy and France. Syria is right there next to Turkey and 100 miles from Saudi Arabia. No need for our AC-130s this time.
I don't think the individual Arab nations have enough air power to do what NATO did in Libya and aren't united enough to have a coalition to launch a land war in Syria.
Syrian rebels have attacked a military base, and Arab League + Turkey are calling for an end, France withdrew its' ambassdors, but Arab League doesn't want foreigners intervering. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-15762260
In 2011, in the GCC, no one has a few troops to spare outside the streets of their own country lest they leave themselves vulnerable to internal attacks on the government. This instability is unpredictable and spontaneous, the troops have to be on call and prepared.
**Except when it comes to Bahrain. The Saudis and the GCC are happy to suppress protesters if need be.
Bahrain is a different case because they are literally across the highway. Some cities IN Saudi Arabia are further from Riyadh/Jeddah than Bahrain. Oh and Syria isn't part of the GCC, and obviously your own peeps come first.
