Okay... so I got it to occasionally show up in the "my computer" window, but when I tell it to open, it won't find any files... it says it's formatted to windows on the "about" screen... but iTunes just doesn't see it. I plug it into the USB, and it goes into "do not disconnect" mode... like it's ready and all... but no recognition at all. I can do the reset by holding Menu and the Center button down... but iTunes still won't see it. The "disk mode" trick won't work either. I tried it on my Vista machine, and even reinstalled iTunes on the XP machine, but no dice. It plays fine. It has 172 songs on it. It just needs to be synced up... and restored through iTunes... but if it won't recognize it, I can't use the restore feature. Any iPod gurus out there? All the "help" forums on Apple's site and other sites are crap. I figured I'd turn to the brilliance that is CF.net before I head to the Apple store. BTW- I picked it up used to give my son (9 yrs. old) for Christmas... and I'm running thin on time to send it off or whatever. It worked fine... how was I to know the syncing might not work? Any ideas?
Are you using the latest version of iTunes? Also, I read this, but I don't have a nano in front of me to see if it works or not: Reset When the apple logo appears hit left + center, that takes you to the diagnostics menu. See what your options are.
From the "Do Not Disconnect" thing you said, I guess it recognizes that it's trying to be "recognized" on a computer or a USB port. That we have established already. Maybe it's only getting the signal from the PC, but not transmitting data it needs to send over to the PC to show the iPod's disk contents on the PC. How about you try a different cable to your PC, or try the same cable but with another iPod brother/sister product? Troubleshooting these things like cables and connections is a pain, I know, but let's see if we can take it a step further. You said that you can "ocasionally" see it in "my computer", or no? Does the computer make the "BEE-deen" USB-is-connected sound, or no? Mix-n-match cables and iPods just for poops and giggles.
Yep... makes the "ding" sound... it's not an OEM cable... I read somewhere else that it might be the issue... Poo nuggets. I have to find someone I know that lives close and has one. I can't seem to find a trick to access the disk mode, or the diagnostic on this unit for some reason. I don't have another one handy either to compare it.
I live in Katy and could lend you a hand checking it out, but you must either bring it to me or wait until Wednesday, when I have to be home. I could help with as much as a FIREWIRE iPod cable and a Belkin iPod USB cable if you want. Let's figure out a way to RESET, REBOOT, RELOAD, RESTORE. What's the model on the back of the iPod? Are you OK with erasing EVERYTHING on it?
Thanks, bro... more than helpful... but I'm in Plano... Collin County, TX... north of the city that sucks major wind.
^^^ LOL! Fail. Salt Lake is NORTH of Collin County! http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/ipod-repair-guides.html ?? I find many YouTube "nano diagnostics iPod" videos where they show how to get to the diagnostics, but since I am not sure which one you have, I can't post one for you. Is it the slim tall nano, or the squareish looking one? I asked for the model earlier. [sent you an email through the board]
The title does say "Ipod Nano 1st Gen".... Based on that: http://video.google.com/videosearch...sa=X&oi=video_result_group&resnum=7&ct=title#
^That video is what I needed to see, bobrek. I wasn't switching buttons fast enough. I think I'm gonna get outta the woods on this one. Swoly, thanks for the link in the email, too. BTW- I successfully replaced the battery before this thread was posted, so I'm glad it wasn't something I did.
It's working! EDIT: Clutchfans.net... The Final Stop For Just About Every Thing You'll Ever Need To Know.
