...or as I refer to it, Apple New Toy day

Lots of rumors, probably a couple surprises balanced by anticipated announcements that don't happen.

All starting in about an hour.

I'm looking forward to this one, since my Nano is on its last legs* and I'm hoping for good things in the iTouch 3rd generation. Hoping the tablet (Mega iTouch) makes its debut, but I've heard that it may not be presented. Forever rumored Beatles catalog on iTunes?

I'm well aware that plenty of posters detest all things Mac. That's fine, please just move along. No one in this thread really cares to hear from you YET AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN about your contempt for mac and mac users. Let go of the hate, Anakin.

Mods, please delete if this thread is a duplicate - didn't see it after a brief search.

    * thanks to our boiling June and July, coinciding with my dumb decision to do another fall marathon, I managed to sweat so much during a 2 hr run that I may as well have bathed with my Nano - backlighting went, and yesterday the screen itself finally fried. Now I've got the biggest capacity shuffle out there.

This whole "versions" of iPods with artists is getting out of hand. A "U2 iPod"? A "Beatles iPod"?!?!? :( It's just silly.

Not for real, I kid... where's my Vicente Fernández, Bronco, Juan Gabriel or Los Tigres Del Norte iPod?!?!?

Since it's mostly iPod stuff not too much that interests me, but some of the stuff they've added to iTunes is nice:

ability to arrange/edit iphone screens from your computer:

new 'LP feature' that adds information/extras to your digital music purchases
    [IMG]

And 'home sharing' - you apparently will be able to share libraries/apps with the other your other authorized computers. (this will be helpful when my wife wants an app I bought)

    Thats weird...

I was just wondering a couple days ago why they never had a way to arrange icons on an iPhone/iTouch from the computer. I absolutely hate doing it on the phone itself.

    My thoughts....

Genius function for Apps - meh. Genius only works so well as it is with music, and the sampling size for the apps will be a fraction of that. What will it do? Offer me redundant versions of the app I already bought? Not expecting much from this.

Ringtones for $1.29 - this is pure crap, and not limited to Apple. It's just as bad as the NFL preseason games - asking people to spend full price for a quarter of the content. Seriously, there should be a one time, $10 app to allow you to set any purchased songs from iTunes to be a 15 sec ringtone. That or charge 50 cents for a ringtone. Be fair.

    iTunes 9
Genius DJ - I'll try it out, but again not expecting my world to reverse orbit.

Advanced Syncing - a minor add in that I doubt I'll bother with. Easier to just make a smart playlist that takes care of that.

App (Home Screen) Mgmt - okay, that's a nice minor touch

Home sharing - nice, especially for those of us with spouses.

iTunes LP - trojan horse to bump up prices. I've got no use for freaking liner notes on my iPod. Digital booklets are pointless enough as it is, IMO.

Adding in Bonus features for movies - again, I give a crap. I was annoyed enough when DVDs came around stuffing 2 extra discs in of BS that I never cared for and never will. Give me the movie, give me a fair price. Cut the pork.

    LOL at the Zune dig.

Games - glad to see they're getting more advanced. I've enjoyed a couple.

    iTouches, fair price points
8 GB $200, 32 GB $300 (the usual big gap to tease the cheapies to buy up), 64 GB $400
--->NO major hardware upgrades?! Camera (eh, didn't really care about that), GPS? WHA?!

iPod Classic: heard that was getting the axe, cool that they're keeping it around a little longer. Clock ticking though. 160 GB, $250.

Shuffle: expanding the available proprietary headphones, but not allowing you to use your own. I'm really not cool with this. I'm tempted to pick up one for my running/biking, but I don't think it's so much to ask that I be permitted to use my own headphones. The price point is great, though: $60 for 2 GB, $80 for 4GB. I'm all over it.....if they gain the common sense to at least offer good running headphones!!!!

Nano: getting all the stuff that makes more sense for the iTouch - camera, mic, speaker. Pedometer makes sense, since it's still a Pod for working out with. Looks like the rumors that the iTouch hardware upgrades went sour are true.

So the lines continue to splinter away from one another, with nano almost becoming an LG chocolate phoneless competitor, the shuffle becoming the only pure workout product (nano becoming less and less ideal), and the iTouch poised to knock out the classic iPod as a multimedia player/MID.

A bit bummed that the iTouch continues to wiff and fail to even keep pace with the iPhone upgrades. No Apple Tablet yet, but that could still happen in Nov, since it's hard to dispute its existance anymore.

Crossing my fingers that the new shuffle is a good option for me to replace my nano with.

yeah you can, it's just a little bit of a pain. My wife and I have separate iTunes accounts on separate computers and we can still share each apps with each other.

you can either copy the .ipa (application) file over to the other computer, or just sign in with your account on the second computer and redownload the app (for free of course).

If you only have one account, then it's even easier- just sign in with the account on both computers.

you can have something like 5 different computers authorized for the same account at once. as long as you have the account authorized on a given computer, any ipod, iphone etc synced to that computer can use all your purchased apps and music.

this change will just make it easier to move songs and apps from computer to computer.

I am fairly certain I have used "normal" headphones with my shuffle (it's the 2nd generation one). It's been a while, but I'll check when I get home.

Yep - it looks an awful lot like they had true 3G iTouch in the works, but were coming off the assembly line with issues (as rumored). This has happened before (with the original iPhone/iTouch launch, if memory serves) and Apple's response has been to shelve the devices for a year rather than "delay" the shipping.

It's one reason they don't announce new products until they're already in the warehouse.

Honestly, it's a good thing. Priority 1 for Apple is to thoroughly control and vet its hardware to ensure high user satisfaction.

The bad thing is, announcing these 2.1G iTouches means that the actual 3G ones aren't coming out anytime soon - they won't turn around and release a 64GB camera iTouch within two months of announcing and selling cameraless ones. Had the iTouch not been mentioned at all today, there would be hope for a Nov drop (see: Tablet).

My guess is the 3G touch is shelved at least until June 2010, and probably until Sept 2010. Craptastic.

This just makes it more and more likely that I'll get a Zune HD on 9/15. Must have HD radio now! :)

The new iTunes store looks awesome, as for their other announcements, not so much.

I believe the touches have the new 3GS processor/ram/graphics, and if so that is a pretty significant upgrade, even if it's 'under the hood'.

The camera rumors appeared to be true, unfortunately for touch owners. Still, I'm sure that will be amended eventually.
