    Shame on them.

I honestly thought it would be different this time, with Israel outright showing the US the middle finger by lifting the moratorium on construction right in the middle of the negotiations.

I'm so dissapointed. I don't think the resolution would stop construction, but it would send an important message.

Not wanting to interfere is a great idea, but it's just a giant sham to believe that the US can withdraw from these negotiations. In any dispute, there must be an independent party to review the facts. Since independence is virtually non-existant when it comes to national soverignty, the UN is potentially the most independent (or the least non-independent) body to play that role. If you want to avoid interfering, how about reviewing/revising the amount of aid/weapons given to Israel.

It's clear that a lack of negotiations favors the Israelis more than it does Palestinians. There is no one in the world who would be insane enough to argue that settlement construction in legitimately disputed land is not a good enough reason for the Palestinians to withdraw from negotiations.

It's getting very tiresome. This news is being broadcasted all across the West Bank, where they will wonder why there is little to no settlement activity in Gaza. What are they going to think?

Here's a re-post of the video someone else posted earlier, to give a glimpse of what kind of people we are talking about when it comes to settlements:

What do you have to say about Gaddhafi and the rulers of Bahrain murdering their people? I notice you were one of the most adamant about getting rid of Mubarak, but you have been eerily silent when it comes to Bahrain. I remember that you mentioned that you traveled there several times. What is your opinion on that?

I argue that the Palestinians should not withdraw from negotiations, regardless.

Why do you direct more outrage and "disappointment" at the USA and Israel than at the rulers of Bahrain and Libya murdering their own people at this point?

    Interesting.

Edit: I notice that after my posts here, you made a post about Bahrain and Libya in the other thread.

    lol

ATW, if you want to talk about ME, then create a thread about ME, ok?

If you have a look at my posting history, you'll notice I haven't really been around for a few days, hence the silence on Libya + Bahrain.

Now please, discuss it in a more appropriate thread.

    Like clockwork.

Anyone care to guess in which direction this will go?

It just seemed odd to me that you would post a long post about a UN resolution to voice your outrage before voicing your outrage about the murders in Bahrain, but as you have now posted about that as well and as you have pointed out that you haven't posted at all in days, I understand.

What would the US have had to lose by condemning the settlements? I watched an interview with the US envoy to the UN yesterday (a lady also named Rice) on Al Jazeera, and I couldn't really understand her explanations why the US vetoed this. It went along the lines of the US having been against the settlements for 30 years, but not wanting to contribute to one side (Israel) becoming even more stubborn because everyone condemns them, or something like that. Didn't make too much sense to me.

Thanks, that's understandable I guess. I've just been soaking in everything that's been happening, and once I finished reading today, I headed over to my fav message boards to discuss.

    Any comments on the veto?

Apparently, according to US diplomats, settlements are not “illegal”. They’re “illegitimate”. It would have been less damamging to just freaking abstain.

It sounds like something an elderly Likud politician would say. The world is reacting as you would expect it too.

Europeans are giving the US a collective "huh?" and are probably likely to crank up the BDS effort. Palestinians will point their fingers and say "see, Obama wasn't serious when he said he was an honest broker." And who can blame them?

There will be a day of rage, for sure, but it will be directed at the US this time, not Israel. The US in this effort have greatly de-legitimized their credibility as a broker for peace.

Ami Kaufman is saying the US role in the ME is over . That might be a bit much, but in any case, Obama is coming out of this looking like Netanyahu's b****, and that's not good for anyone...except maybe Netanyahu.

President Urkel is a complete amateur and doesn't know what he's doing. He's indecisive and weak.

Now that you mention it, I remember that from that interview as well. Sounds rather ridiculous to me, to be honest. I agree with you.

I think if the US had abstained though the resolution would've passed and as a Security Council resolution it would've had the force of law behind it.

I agree this was a very poor move by the US and the phrasing does nothing to ameliorate the situation. This seems like a failure of US diplomacy to allow the US to be put in the situation where this vote came up. At the minimum they should have been able to try to reword the resolution.

Susan Rice on Meet the Press said the same thing. She said the US vetoed b/c the condemnation is one-sided and would only make Israel position even harder.
I guess that's a very nice summary the US view of U.N. when it doesn't need U.N.

I don't know if you actually believe that, but just generally speaking..

That's the most idiotic excuse Ms Rice could have possibly made. The Palestinian Authority did nothing to sabotage the negotiations, absolutely nothing.

The Israelis decided to allow the moratorium to end knowing full well that it would sabotage negotiations. All the while they are spewing this twisted "don't bring preconditions" bull**** everywhere. The moratorium was lifted DURING negotiations - it was not a PRE condition to begin with. Aside from that, it is a condition created by one of the negotiating parties - how can you punch someone in the nuts and ask them not to scream? How can you have a clear position in negotiations when the reality on the ground is changing and unstable.

The condemnations must be one-sided in this case. What criticism could possibly be directed to the Palestinians in this case?

The thing that annoys me MOST is that this gives Hamas more legitimacy in the eyes of Palestinians. They claimed from the start that the US would be biased, and Gazans do not have to face settlements despite being less friendly with Israel. They are starting to see the correlation between peacefulness and settlement activity.

Just think about it from the West Bank perspective. You try to negotiate and are basically willing to give away the farm, Israel throws in a wrench. You go to the UN council to condemn the throwing in of the wrench, and the US throws a wrench into that. Who do you look to for help? What do you do?

A sad situation for everyone but the settlers.

Of course not. There is an obvious double standard on the US's part.

I don't get it. What do we possibly gain for playing favorites for Israel over Palestine? I thought we were the superpower. Why are we so willing to bend over backwards for Israel? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I'm not sure why this is even worth a thread. The US supported Israel at the UN? No ****ing way! They've never done that before...

This would be a more appropriate response in one of the tens of anti-Muslim threads by ATW and his cronies.
