CD wakes up and get to work! By Monday maybe all good candidates have gone.

Rockets still taking their team looking for a coach
    MICHAEL A. LUTZ
    Associated Press

HOUSTON - Houston Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson wasn't surprised the Detroit Pistons reportedly were interested in Larry Brown after the Pistons fired Rick Carlisle on Saturday.

"Everybody was after Larry, I don't think anybody with an opening wasn't interested in Larry," Dawson said.

Brown resigned last week as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and interviewed with the Rockets along with fellow former NBA coaches Mike Dunleavy, Jeff Van Gundy and Paul Silas. The Houston job became vacant May 23 with the resignation of Rudy Tomjanovich.

<b>After dismissing Carlisle, the NBA coach of the year in the 2001-02 season, Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said he would like to talk with Brown.</b>

A source told The Associated Press in Detroit that Brown would be the next Pistons coach.

As for the Rockets, Dawson said he and owner Les Alexander are pleased with the candidates they've interviewed and plans had not been made to talk with Carlisle.

"We don't have any other plans right now," Dawson said. "I'm not saying we're done, but we're happy with the people we've interviewed. It's hard to keep interviewing when you want to talk to one coach about a job and you keep interviewing others."

Dawson said the Rockets had completed the first phase of their search.

    <b>
"We're not nearly as far along as everyone else that's been doing this a while," Dawson said, referring to some of the eight other NBA coaching searches. "We've completed the initial contacts and haven't followed up on anything."</b>

Tomjanovich stepped down last week after leading the Rockets to two NBA championships in 12 seasons as head coach. Tomjanovich, who has been with the Rockets 33 years as a player, scout or coach, settled the two remaining years on his Rockets contract and will remain within the organization.

"We're fortunate to have that much coaching talent out there," Dawson said. "Now Rick Carlisle has been added to the mix. It's been an amazing year. Who knows, somebody else might be available tomorrow."

Is the title supposed to be:

"Rockets still taking their time looking for a coach" ?

I'm assuming you cut and pasted this, right?

I have to disagree with the thread title here. Rudy has been gone barely a week and we have interviewed 4 candidates in that week. Doesn't sound like they are taking their time to me.

The last thing I want to see is for CD and Les to hire someone without doing their research. Lets make sure this next coach can do as good of a job as Rudy or better. Anything less is unacceptable.

No! To all of then and in particular Pat past it Riley and Phil 9 ring Jackson. Both of these caoches never built a team, only guided teams of Stars to Championships. They just wont do. We need a teacher and the best teacher in the NBA is Larry Brown by far!!

Les get off your ass and hurry up and hire Dunleavy and bring along Mario Elie or Avery Johnson as one of his assistants to keep the hardheaded players in line.

Phil Jackson turned that team into a championship level team. He taught the 2 big superstars (a guard and a center I should add) in LA how to get along with one another. If Phil took this job and turned this team into a championship team, everyone in the league would still be knocking him for not building this team. It would be a dream come true if we could get Phil Jackson on this team. If you see anyone jacking up shots or dribbling out the clock, you can count on Phil taking him out and making a point. That's exactly the type of coach we need...

Just to further elaborate on what BGM said, this team is not being built or rebuilt. The peices of the puzzle (with the exception of some tweaking by adding a veteran or two) are in place. You say that all Riley and Jackson do, is lead a team of stars to a title. Well, we have a team of stars (Francis and Yao) and guess what? They need guidance. ;)
