New Kids on the Block to Reunite

BOSTON (AP) — They may be pushing 40, but the New Kids are returning to the block. The Boston boy band New Kids on the Block, which sold 70 million albums in the 1980s and early 1990s, has reunited and plans to release a new album and go on tour. The reunion comes 20 years after the release of the group's multi-platinum album, "Hanging Tough."

The group released a new photo Wednesday and reportedly will appear on the Today show Friday morning — the same time an unmarked countdown clock on http://www.nkotb.com ends.

"The fan response to this has been incredible," band member Donnie Wahlberg told the Boston Herald.

Wahlberg said he was convinced to get back together with his former bandmates — Joey McIntyre, brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood — when they decided to record new music. Wahlberg said he wrote 80 percent of the new material with McIntyre and Jordan Knight.

"I had no interest going out on a nostalgia tour and singing the same material," said Wahlberg, 38.

But he added, "We absolutely will do the old songs for sure."

Producer Maurice Starr formed the group in Boston in the 1980s, hoping to recreate the success he had with another teen group from the city, New Edition.

At the height of their popularity, New Kids sold out world tours, marketed millions of dollars in merchandise and spawned a Saturday morning cartoon.

The group disbanded in 1994. Wahlberg has acted on television and in movies, while Jordan Knight, McIntyre and Wood released solo albums. Jonathan Knight became a real estate developer.

They performed on Celebrity Apprentice a few weeks ago. They seemed like a bunch of jackasses. They were acting like they were actually relevant or something.

I have a pretty standard rule for myself here on my favorite BBS: If I don't care, I don't post, because it really serves no purpose, wastes bandwidth, and just may be insulting to those who do actually care.

I'm suspending that rule for this thread.

The sad part is that probably a whole ton of people somewhere will care, and I'll be forced to endure the crap that was, and apparently still is, the New Kids on the Block.

Ah, NKOTB, reminds me of the joke that always made me chuckle in high school....

Question: What has 10,000 arms and legs and no pubic hair???

Answer: The front row of a NKOTB concert!

    :D

Not that it matters, but they are actually several years late doing this. Couple of them had solo albums years ago, when the boy band bubble gum pop was still charting, and they should have parlayed that into a reunion.

Also they let their fan base get older. 7 years ago they were all still young women. Now its going to be a bunch of soccer moms convincing their husbands to let them go or a bunch of expired groupie hags trying to rekindle

That would be like 2500 people in one row.

In the new picture, they all look like... classic "douchebags".

Everyone's trying to recapture a bit of their 15 minutes for the money these days. Some of them just let it go and had normal careers for a while, but no, they have to go stick themselves back in the spotlight. I don't think this will be too successful - they s*cked even then. There were much better boy bands later like BSB and N*Sync (and I'm more in the NKOTB original demographic... and no I am not a washed up hag or soccer mom, not yet...).

It does bring back bad memories of the girls I ate lunch with in high school going nuts over the concert and bringing out their New Kids scrapbook. If this reunion is successful, I'll try to pass out earplugs for everybody.

I know a good NKOTB joke but it's too un-PC to post here. :(
