Spurs Add A. Carter, NBDL Rookie of Year D. Brown Compiled From Wire Reports SAN ANTONIO (July 30) -- The San Antonio Spurs signed free-agent guards Anthony Carter and Devin Brown on Wednesday. Carter spent his four-year career in Miami, averaging 4.1 points and 4.1 assists in 49 games last season. He became a free agent when his representatives mistakenly failed to exercise a player option that would have allowed him to make $4.1 million with the Heat next season. "This is a fresh start for me and a great honor to play for the defending world champions," Carter said. "It will be a tremendous challenge to return to championship form, but it is a challenge I think I'll be up to." In San Antonio, Carter is expected to replace Speedy Claxton as Tony Parker's backup at point guard. Claxton signed a free-agent deal with Golden State. "Anthony Carter is a proven NBA player who has experience as both a starter and a reserve,'' Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "He is a good defensive player and will fit well into our system.'' Brown, a former standout at Texas-San Antonio, played briefly with the Spurs last season. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.0 rebounds in seven games. Afterward, he joined Fayetteville in the National Basketball Development League, finishing as the league's MVP and rookie of the year after averaging 16.9 points. He later averaged 6.0 points and 3.6 rebounds in three games with Denver following the NBDL season. Copyright 2003 The Associated Press and SportsTicker. although these two players aren't stars....they're still pretty decent acquisitions...well carter is but i have no clue bout the NBDL guy. kudos to the spurs.
I think it's good that their summer league was made up of all the good players from the NBDL to give them a chance and TMo although they didn't play too well.....mainly because they don't have any new draft picks...where did all the guys on the Rockets summer league team come from?!? It's good that the Spurs are adding all these small veterans....they are already contenders...and still adding....which is good.
I wonder if Kerr is coming back. The Spurs are in real need for shooters, granted Ferry and Smith are old, but not bringing back Jackson and Kerr would be a mistake IMO. Maybe the Brown fellow can shoot.
Instead of making $4.1 mil next yr, Carter will work 2 yrs to get $1.5 mil? http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/story?id=1587613 ESPN.com news services The San Antonio Spurs have signed Miami Heat free-agent guard Anthony Carter, the team announced Wednesday. He signed a two-year deal for the league minimum, which is around $1.5 million, ESPN has learned. Carter holds an option for the second season. "Anthony Carter is a proven NBA player who has experience as both a starter and a reserve," said Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford in a statement released by the club. "He is a good defensive player and will fit well into our system." The 6-2, 195-pound Carter has spent his entire four-year NBA career with the Miami Heat. A mixup in his agent's office caused Carter to miss the deadline to exercise a $4.1 million player option on his Miami contract, making him a free agent. ....
I remember Brown from the college dunk contest a year or two ago. I like him, hes got hops, good luck to him.
Spurs needed an experienced point guard who could handle being a reserve and they only had minimum salary to work with. Carter can run an offense and he will play aggressive defense. That works for the Spurs. He won't be counted on for his offense, obviously. Just come in, run the offense for 13 to 15 minutes, play team D, and hand the keys back to Parker. A good signing given the circumstances. As for the shenanigans involving Carter's contract and his agent's (Bill Duffy) office, I've yet to hear what has come of that. I would think that Duffy would make up the difference between what Carter was supposed to get from the Heat for 2003-04 and what he's signed for now. If not, then Carter is a very forgiving man...or the lawsuit has yet to be filed. In regards to Brown he's a local kid, built strong for a guard. 21 years old. Very coachable and was a good scorer in college. Will defend. He had a cup of coffee with both the Spurs and Nuggets last season with a stint in the NBDL inbetween. He'll probably spend next season on IR or as the 12th man learning the ropes just like Jackson did in 2001-02. Willis seems to be a lock to return. Kerr is reportedly weighing retiring to a broadcasting career or returning for one more tour. If Kerr doesn't come back then Devin Brown will probably take his roster spot. That is, unless the Spurs opt to bring in another vet for the minimum (maybe a big like Tyrone Hill) or in what is probably a fantasy at this point...they bring back Stephen Jackson using his Early Bird rights.
Buzzer-beating behind-the-backboard game-winner in Madison Square Garden Anthony Carter? I thought he had already faded into obscurity.
I don't know about D. Brown but Anthony Carter is a worthless pickup. He's not an NBA caliber player. I used to like Miami when ZO was playing and I never understood what Riley saw in him. He is a BAD shooter and not a good passer. His only asset is pushing the ball up the court but nothing usually comes of it so I don't really think he is an upgrade over S. Claxton.
