I just switched from AOL for broadband ($44.95/month) via Roadrunner to Roadrunner. Unbelieveable!!! 1 Starting last week, you can now get AOL for free with Roadrunner. Yes, I said free! No BYOA for $14.95/month. The "catch" is you get absolutely no tech support from AOL at all. Waaah! 2 My downloads speeds exploded right before my eyes. I had an AOL and a Roadrunner guy on the phone at the same time. A few seconds after they told me the change was made, I closed AOL on my computer. My BitComet downloads went from ~80KB/sec to zero and I thought there was a problem. Then right before my eyes, my downloads went to over 300KB/sec in a matter of 30 seconds. I am one happy camper now. I resented having to boot up AOL in order to connect to the internet and I constantly lost connections and had to restart AOL on a regular basis in order to browse the web. Funny thing was my downloads would keep downloading while Firefox wouldn't connect. At first, all I intended to do was question the AOL guy to see if I could keep my 14 year old email address if I cut AOL off. That prompted him to tell me about the new free AOL with Roadrunner. Now I have the best of both worlds: My longtime email address with ridiculous connections speeds. There was a thread a couple of months ago where people posted their connection speeds using http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/. I felt like weakling. Now I can proudly say I'm at 3447kbps! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! P.S. You can call AOL at 800 827 6364 to make the switch. The AOL person will call Roadrunner and you will do a three-way conversation to complete the switch. Took about 20 minutes and I didn't need to restart or reboot my computer or modem. At the end, the AOL recommended that I turn my modem off for 15 seconds to reset it. I haven't yet.
So you were paying 44.95 for freaking AOL for Broadband? That's like, 768kbps. You've been getting jipped. Congrats on joining the real world.
My only love for AOL is my longtime email address. That's it. There are a lot of us who have hung on this long for that reason. Now I'm free of the "devil"!
AOL is the devil. Every month I open my credit card statement and there is some bogus charge from AOL for 29.99. I have never used AOL for anything before. Every month, I have to contest the charges and eventually the credit card company sides with me. I've tried calling the AOL fraud dept, but I've never reached an actual person.
Roadrunner has been running at 6 Mb/s for at least a year now. AOL has been screwing you with those speeds and that price. I just switched from Roadrunner to AT&T Yahoo. I still get 6Mb/s downloads but my uploads went from 384kb/s with Roadrunner to 768kb/s now. And it's $20 cheaper, at only $29.95. Loving it so far. Only problem is my IP changes all the time now with DSL, whereas I would have my Roadrunner IP for over a year.
Mine's 4810 with RR. Do you have the Ambit modem? A tech guy with T/W, out at the house to give me another cable outlet, said they were the fastest right now. That if you brought the older model in they'd give you an Ambit, but you had to ask for it. At any rate, I was running about what you are now before I took mine in and switched it. (probably everyone already has one, and I've finally caught up! ) Welcome to broadband!
I can still access my email after quitting 2 years ago. Not that I want to... I pay 12.99 for broadband through DSLextreme.
hmm, what's this? i've had their toshiba cable modem for as long as i can remember and i'm perfectly happy with it but i'll always take more speed. so just take the toshiba in and they'll give me an ambit one? if so i'll do it tomorrow afternoon.
Right, that's what you do. I live in Austin, and they had them. I'd had my old modem for years, as well. I've noticed a speed difference. Doesn't hurt to check it out.
I had a service problem a year or so ago and a technician came out and switched me to an Ambit modem. It's about 1/4 the size of the clunker I had before. I just cut off my downloads for a minute and ran the test again. It was 4660 kbps. So we are about the same. This is totally awesome! It feels stupid staying in jail so long with the door wide open.
I'm using AOL dial up and I love it -- they just reduced my monthly fees down 29.99 a month and I only had to mail three letters to get the reduction. I love it when the guy says, "You've got mail" -- i've tried those other free mail services, but they don't talk.
screw AOL. after going through several "we'll give another 3 months free" calls, they're just not worth the hassle.
