A nice writeup in the Chron about it the other day:

When Guy Kawasaki launched his Alltop aggregation site a year ago, it faced the scorn of tech snobs who didn't appreciate what amounted to an old-school directory of blog and news content.

"Wow, it's bad," was the headline on TechCrunch.

With Alltop, Kawasaki took the RSS feeds of the best sites and categorized them according to topic, an approach taken years ago by portals such as Yahoo and more recently by sites like Popurls. It was simple, easy to use and didn't require users to get their hands dirty figuring out how to subscribe to XML feeds.

Despite the criticism, Kawasaki persevered, applying his substantial marketing smarts to building Alltop's audience. He became a force on Twitter, using it to solicit ideas for new topics, recruit help in building them and, most importantly, pushing out interesting links that promoted his creation.

Based on data from analytics firm Compete.com, Alltop has grown steadily, despite a slight drop in unique visitors in February. But a change made to the site last week could kick it to the next level.
