Just wondering, a coworker is on this and I am envying his breakfast of bacon and eggs every day. Read a bit of the web site and it sounds very involved with different stages and an introductory stage that starts a complete change with the typical American diet that would be hard to do without the pamphlet by your side at every meal.
Wait a second, it's meat and fat all the way, in my limited understanding of it. It's obviously more complicated than that, but my coworker wolfs down the protein and has lost 75 pounds in three months. The expense for food has gotta be high, though.
If you can search, do it. For some reason my username can't search the site. DaDakota has made a series of updates on his Atkins experience. I have used a low carb diet before and occasionally still do. Bottom line is it will drop the weight if followed but it isn't a good idea if you are trying to add muscle or strength. It won't tear down too much muscle, but with glycogen stores depreciated, you body won't be able to handle much training volume. I highly suggest low carb for losing fat however. I also suggest low calorie. Either will work.
There are several people on here that are currently on the diet and usually post updates on their diets.
well, a few people I know have tried it, and although you do get as much protien as you want you pretty much take a vow of celibacy from excessive carbs and starches, and i mean stricter than the vow that priests take. that means no bread, no pasta, no cake, no breaded chicken, no waffles, no cereal etc . I just wouldn't be able to do that. What it does is it shocks your body and forces it to change your metabolism to get energy from protein which is harder to break down than carbs, the transition period can be tough. Now, however, you cannot cheat, if you do, you will only get fatter, i know this from the people who do cheat, they go weeks eating what they should and then one day they have a muffin or spaghetti and it all comes back and more. if you cheat, you pretty much have to start over, and its harder to boot. If you cheat multiple times, you mess up your metabolism and ability to change and not only is it unhealthy, but you may never get thin again. So, if you want to do it, be prepared to have the willpower or try something else.
You get your energy from fat, not protein. And after losing about 14 pounds in less than a month (almost ten the first week), circumstances made it difficult to stay on. I'm getting ready to start up again, but I've been off for over a month, and still lose about a half-pound every week just by staying away from soft drinks, etc. So I'm down around 16 pounds and not regaining. My exercising during the first month may also have helped me keep the weight off (increased my basal metabolic rate).
I found this place on the west side of town that sells virtually every Atkins product ever man, and some I didn't even know existed, at bargain basement prices. It's called Sandy's. It's a health food store on I-10 West a little past the beltway.. exit Dairy Ashford and go under the freeway, it'll be on your right past a car dealership. Anyone doing this diet needs to buy the book and read it first, that's the biggest help. But having a place like Sandy's to support your diet is also essential. I started the diet in March at 263lbs, I'm now 213lbs.
check that.. do a u-turn under the freeway, don't just turn left.. and start heading East on the I-10 feeder.. it'll be on your right.
I've just lost about 10 lbs by cutting out bread, extra sugars from colas and candy and somewhat limiting my carbs. I don't get fries any more. Not eating pizza is tough though.
I've done 15 days of the induction phase of Atkins and have lost about 7 kilograms. I love the fact i am not hungry between meals. have mixed up my diet enough that i am going to stick with induction for another week. my energy levels were crap for the first week, but since then they have been pretty good, i exercise and play ball a fair bit. come to the realisation i could live without bread and it really does nothing for you, you eat lots of it and it doesn't fill you up. protein fills you so much, i really have had nearly no desire to snack between meals.
This is not only because of the satiety of protein but because it is has a very low glycemic index and your blood sugar doesn't spike and crash.
LeGrouper, where does alcohol fit in with Atkins and generally eating things with a low glycemic index???
Alcohol, by itself, is actually a carbohydrate but it digests as fatty acids at 7 calories per gram. By itself it is low glycemic and can be used on the Atkins. Atkins Alcohol Carb Chart Beer (12oz) - 12.5g Bourbon - 0g Brandy - 0g Gin - 0g Rum - 0g Tequila - 0g Vodka - 0g Whiskey - 0g Wine, Red (4oz) - 2.0g Wine, White (4oz) - 0.9g Note that there are of course mixed drinks that involve fruit juices, sugars, and other sweet concoctions. If you start mixing in sodas or juices for a cocktail, you're racking up the carbs very quickly.
Nyquil, how much can you cheat and still get it to work? Example, I have recently cut out all starches except I still have a bagel or a bowl of cereal in the morning; however, I don't do the other hardcore atkins type stuff. I don't throw down eggs or bacon or high fat stuff to compensate, I just took my normal diet, which was't bad to begin with and was mostly protein, vegetables and carbs, and removed about 70% of the carbs. Does it still work for me? Or am I just doing regular dieting?
Actually it is funny that eating carbs in the morning but not the evening is a strategy that some of my strength training buddies use to keep their body fat down but their energy high. The reason is that once the carbs spike your glycogen you work out. Then the rest of the day your glycogen stores go down and your body burns fat during the afterburn period after your workout. But you have to remember one thing about the Atkins is that you aren't cutting out fat. You are eliminating the things that spike your insulin - carbs. By itself it will work to make your body burn fat because as long as you have glycogen in your muscles your body just won't tap into your fat. But a low calorie diet will also work to lower body weight.
