Look at their roster over the past years, all white, 1 or 2 minorities(productive ones) at most. Coincidences don't happen for this long. I've suspected this thing ever since 2005 when the only minority in the starting lineup was Taveras, and now he's gone. Lee is signed, but that still puts it in the 1 or 2 productive minorities list. Look at the Yankees or the Red Sox, they have a lot of minorities, is it simply because they think these players are better whereas the Astros aren't "interested" in them?
I don't know if they are racist, but it is strange how we have so few minority players....I don't think it is coincidence
I know. cause really, young blacks are flocking to the urban baseball fields like never before. Hell, if we just cut funding for our venezuelan edeavors and looked more to the negro leagues, I think we'd be ok. But that damn racist Drayton. I swear he even only sells groceries to whites
Of course they're racist. You should've seen the contract they were offering Carlos Lee before they realized he wasn't white.
Wasn't Drayton the Boss when Everett, Alou, and Bell were mainstays of the team. He also was on board when Bob Watson became the first African American GM. I dunno...he is a Baylor guy of a certain age...so maybe he has some prejudices, but I honestly don't think he is telling Pupura to get white players. I do think he likes players with local PR appeal and a Texas connection (especially if he can finagle a "hometown" discount.....so maybe that tends to promote a white bias. I think baseball as a whole is having problems attracting the best African American athletes because baseball players don't seem to have the street cred basketballers and football players have.
Aww geez here we go again. To my mind, baseball is a billion dollar business. There's no room for racial bias in it. You try to put the best team together you can regardless of race. Otherwise, no one comes to see your games, and you lose a ton of money. If anything, the Astros were one of the leaders in developing diversity. They're the first team to create a baseball academy in Latin America (the Venezuelan academy) for the purposes of coaching and scouting the talent in the area. They've never shied away from minority players (Lee, Beltran, Orlando Palmiero, Willy T, Wandy, Zeke Astascio, etc.). Looking at the roster on astros.com, I see at least 12 players of minority status on the 40 man roster. Granted that's not a great ratio, but 30% (at least) still isn't terrible. I do note there are not a lot of African-American players, but baseball's popularity with that racial group has never been terribly strong, I'm not sure why. I guess they just choose to go more into football and basketball. I don't know. And how many African-American players do you find on any one roster? It's probably not going to be a high percentage. To me, the Astros are no more racist than the Mets, who have apparently given Omar Minaya the okay to build a Latin American All-Star team.
eh, I can't walk away. This conversation is ridiculous any time - but in an offseason where they gave Carlos Lee $100,000,000 and offered a similar contract to Alfonso Soriano it's downright baffling.
I can't believe they traded Jeriome Robertson for Willy in the first place... any time a guy spells his name like JERIOME ("jeremy")... you know he's REALLY white. "Just some good ol' boys..." (and Carlos Lee)
But if only these guys realized how easily fast speed, athleticism, and hand-eye coordination they use in basketball/football translated over to baseball... where they have a better chance of making the pro leagues (with an affiliated minor league system), could have a longer average career, and hell... they could MAKE MORE MONEY with the way the MLB contracts are going.
Whenever a minority gets traded or released from the Astros they are called racist. Is Omar Minaya racist?
