Clinton was well spoken as usual. He pretty much had Letterman on the run all night. Letterman tried to be serious, but you could tell he was out of his element. Bill impressed me once again. He really is a bright guy most of the time. It's just too bad he made some dumb decisions.
he is bright, brilliant, likeable, charismatic and quite possibly the most intelligent president we've ever had...
And that's why I've grown to hate him. He easily could've been one of the most memorable and popular presidents ever, across the board, had he not been such a slimebag.
Bill Clinton is the Democrats' Richard Nixon. He had greatness in his grasp, and his personal problems/behavioral flaws caused him to screw the pooch. Watch for this thread to be revived in 2004, because George W. Bush is the Republican's Jimmy Carter...he's a nice man with fine moral character, but he's in way over his head.
Clinton was outstanding last night. You could tell his charisma and intellect had even Letterman flabbergasted. I was very impressed with his answers and at the same time depressed that his presidency is forever "stained."
Clinton was pretty damn popular. I bet he would have won a third term if it wasnt against the rules. I think his flaws made him loved by the average guy. I met him in Nashville in 1992....extremely charismatic. I went from a Bush backer to a Clinton volunteer that evening. A huge thing considering that the Bushes are family friends. Too bad he couldnt keep his pants on.
He had a shaky start... Dave asked him if he still plays the saxophone, Clinton said, " I still BLOW, every once in a while..." The crowd erupted in laughter. Bill, though still in control, looked a little uncomfortable. Aside from that, I thought it was an outstanding interview.
Dude looked like he hit Jenny Craig big time! Just listening to the guy, you know that he is extremely intelligent. Still has a lot of good ideas for America. dD
Those are REALLY interesting comparisons. We'll have to see with Bush and Carter. Carter was pretty damn squeeky, almost like a choir boy. Bush isn't exactly that clean, but I think the comparisons are pretty apt.
Rocketman, Very interesting comment. Not sure, though, that I'd agree that Clinton was the demos' Nixon. Clinton, for all his issues, was far superior to Nixon. All ya gotta do is look at his cabinet vs. Nixon's. Clinton has the sharpest tacks in the drawer (i.e., Robert Rubin, Sec. of Treasury, former Chair of Goldman Sachs, who was the architect of the 1997 - 2000 balanced budget). Clinton left a pot of gold in Washington. It's been plundered and we've been robbed blind by, who else, multimillionaires. In the space of 2 short years, we're again operating in a deficit and have a $12 trillion shortfall projected through 2012; whereas Clinton had a $10 trillion surplus in the offering. GONE, GONE, GONE. Clinton spoke a couple of weeks ago to a gathering in New York. He said the Republicans run on ideology and guilt, and "spent $80 million of YOUR money trying to tell people that I'm a sinner. Hell, they could have asked anyone of you for free and gotten the same answer". He was truly a man for the ages. Like him or hate him, he was perfect for the time. I think we're gonna miss him a lot very shortly.
i disagree..i think he's quite capable...and i think people underestimate him big time... but i have conservative friends who agree wholeheartedly with you...they say that nice guys don't make great presidents.
Hey guys...my analogy wasn't meant to diss Clinton or Bush (or Carter or Nixon for that matter). I sincerely believe both of them. I believe Clinton would have been one of the greatest Presidents in history had he only been able to keep "little Bill" under control. And I also believe that Bush, like Carter, is in over his head. I admit that Bush is experiencing extraordinary circumstances that no other President has had to face, and it would take Superman as President to not be in over your head with current events the way they are. However, I also find Bush's war posturing unnerving, and I find his total disregard for domestic policy to be identical to his father's, and that frightens the hell out of me.
I am so pissed! I had NO idea Bill was on Letterman! I watched f***ing McCain on Leno last night, when I could have been watching Clinton!!! Bloody f***ing hell!!
