I bought myself a second hand Dreamcast and got hold of NBA2K1 this week. This game is great...I have played literally every b-ball video game and this one is miles ahead of the rest. It's so far ahead of Live2000 that I won't even bother to make any comparisons. Suffice to say, it's pretty cool to play a basketball game where a realistic post up game actually exists.

I was kind of curious with this game as to why the reviews ranged from "best simulation EVER" to "crap...NBA jam on steroids" and now I know why...it really all comes down to how you play it. If you play it as a sim, it really is great. It has it's flaws, but it's still a huge advance in the genre.

I won't bother with a review, as theirs enough of those on the net...but some of the things that have really impressed me so far include:

As stated, the post up game is incredible. It actually feels like your in their working the paint. Even better, not all players are the same. I played as Seattle against Golden State, and Ewing was able to back down Dampier pretty easily. I then went up against San Antonio and I was getting forced out of the paint by Robinson...

The defense is damm hard in this game. If you don't master it, they kill you...and I can see how this could be frustrating. You have to do a lot of button pressing, and it starts to piss you off when it doesn't come together. The faster players are almost impossible to guard...Iverson and Francis lit me up big time.

The graphics are just flat out cool. They really are amazing...I was playing Portland and zoomed in on Stoudamire and you can even clearly see his "Days of Grace" tatoo. Same with Brian Grants Marley tatt. Crazy stuff. A game doesn't need tatt's etc to be realistic, but it sure adds to the atmosphere when you go up against Iverson etc and they look real.

The franchise mode is great also. The ability to trade draft picks is great fun...and adds heaps to your decison making. I am going to play as the Rocks, so maybe Dream will be traded afterall:)

I don't play video games all that much nowadays...my wife and I normally just play FIFA together on the PC:)...but I have been playing these B-Ball games ever since "Lakers v Celtics" and I have to say that this one is the best by a long, long way...

BTW- anyone recommend anything else for the Dreamcast? I know the console has the RIP sign hanging over it's head...will they release a 2002 range of sport games also?

I've played it at my friends house and yes indeed it is sweeet compared to my NBA Live 2000. And the answer to your question is yes, they will release the 2002 version of their basketball, football, and baseball series', but no more after those. Another good game if you don't already have it is NFL2k1. I don't even need to start on how good that one is.

It is a great game, but full of glitches and slight faults that can really get annoying.
For example, the crowd sound effects will sometimes freeze, and you hear this loud never-ending roar for the entire game.
The computer team rarely shoots outside shots. That is unrealistic, and the constant dribble penetration is rediculous. Shooting is very difficult, and often REALLY good shooters are pure crap in this game. Playing defense is difficult indeed...
The computer defense steals the ball from good ball-handlers almost every time a cross-over is tried. There are way too many steals. The computer blocks ten shots a game. Me? About 0.5. Too many missed layups and too many charging fouls.
It is amazing how great the game can be, despite the many flaws listed above. There is something just SO addictive about it.
Just one problem, the game is too easy after a while. I went 80-2 with the Rockets on the highest difficulty. That is with the current roster and everything.
It is still a lot of fun, though. Those graphics are beautiful.

All sports video games tend to get easy after a while. I remember winning 77 games with the Clippers on NBA line 2000.

On my Live 2000 my starting lineup is the All star starting lineup and i have my 6th man playing off the bench in the all star game.

Yeah...the blocks are a bit to prevalent, but it makes me think much more about my shot so I don't mind it. I pump fake in the post before shooting etc.
The swat block look heaps cool but...Camby put one into the seats...that impressed me no end!

The way I look at it is all these games have got some sort of inherent flaw...and this one has, by far, the least 'evil' of all the problems.

For example, the Live series has two major...and I mean MAJOR flaws...in that it has no post up game whatsoever and that it has no fast break game whatsoever. I can leave all my guys up court and the Live PG still won't go to the hoop. He pulls up every time. I like the Live series, but those things really killed it for me. It is such a cool feeling to post up your big man and then decide whether to kick it out, take a fadeaway, drive to the hoop etc etc...I love the post up game in NBA2K1.

The three point thing is a bit of a worry...I hadn't noticed it much so far, they seemed to shoot the three okay, but I'll take your word for it.

I don't get enough time to ever get great at any of these games also so it's hard enough for me on starter level...I only just scraped into the playoffs in Live 2000. LOL:)

2k1 is a cool game...and I'll be first in line for 2k2. I still can't get over the graphics...!

Just think of how sweet Madden and NBA Live 2002 will look on the Xbox.

I also heard a rumor that the Dreamcast Chipset will be included in the Xbox allowing users to switch between Xbox and Dreamcast games. That would be wild.

Maybe Sega can make a NBA 2k2 version for the Xbox.

I've had the luxury of playing NBA2K and 2K1, and Live2001 and Live01. Basically, they all rock. Live01 is more realistic, but the fun factor and variety in 2K1 is unmatched. I mean, I still can play live01 for hours, but after a while, you got to stop. 2K1 though, I can go for days. It gots 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4, and regular. It's a little too fluid though. Both rock though, big time.

    Which version of Live 2001?

The PC one should be cool...but the console ones I heard were not all that great. Glad you like them all so much however:)
