Maybe learn to play the guitar first then pick up the ukelele? That way you'd actually know how to a play and instrument that's actually worth a damn. I kid, go for it! I always support people learning to express themselves through music. Nothing like it.
When you begin, strum with your pointer finger, not your thumb. Watch this: <iframe width="480" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/j_at_nglL3M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I play casually and greatly enjoy it. I suggest beginning with simple strum songs, like this: <iframe width="480" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/hw5eUMrdmUE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Once you start playing, you'll really enjoy the abilities of Jake Shimabukuro. <iframe width="480" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/puSkP3uym5k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Are people really serious about not doing this? 1) i don't have too much time on my hands, with work and other stuff occupying my life. I read this was easy. 2) this is a real chick magnet if i learn it right 3) it's cheap 4) i don't have any other musical talent, i'm turning 26 5) again, i don't have much time Which beginner uke should i buy, droxford?
You should do it. It's fun as hell and simple to get going on. I doodle around on a Kala. You might want to look at those. Learn some chords and experiment, find some simple songs to copy. Good luck!
Not sure if you want to enter into the 29 dollar investment like a ukelele without soliciting some more opinions - I suggest the bodybuilding.com forums.
I play guitar, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele. Ukulele is the simplest of the fretted strings to pay, yet tons of fun. It's my second favorite, next to guitar. Banjo is effing hard.

Uke has weird @ss tuning for a stringed instrument. Sort of like a banjo where the top string is higher pitch than the one below it. It had a real strong hipster/nerd vibe circa 2010. Best Uke album that I'm familiar with (for inspiration): http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aman...ular_Hits_of_Radiohead_on_Her_Magical_Ukulele <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/1ogNJkXGd0w?list=PL2A0F3F6183029B94" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>)
Bump... So how'd this work out for you OP? I went to Guitar Center today to pass some time during lunch and walked out with a ukulele. I already play a few other instruments, so I'm kinda looking forward to eventually be able to transfer some of that skill to this... Should be fun.
