I am looking at purchasing a radar detector, but I don't want to spend over 100 bucks. I am looking for some advice on which type of detector to purchase or suggestions on what characteristics my radar should possess.

Any radar detector under $100 is worthless, from my experience.

The Valentine is the best, but they are extremely expensive.

I've had the Beltronics top of the line models over the past 5 years. They've saved me from tens of tickets in that time frame.

I know people who bought the cheap Cobra models that ended up not working.

If you're going to do something, do it right. That's my motto.

What about Whistlers? My friend has one of those and says it is pretty good.

I had to disassemble a radar detector for my physics class a few months ago, and, through my research, I found that the Cobra and Valentine detectors are the most popular on the market.

I didn't see one for less than $300.

I would give you the one that I took apart, but it is disassembled and missing a capacitor.

Those little things you put on your front bumper? I think they scare deer, but not cops.

I have no personal knowledge of them. I will highly recommend Bels because those are the only brand I've ever used and they've never done me wrong.

You must have also seen that movie. It scared me for days. Guys I am just looking for a decent radar detector for a reasonable price. Your input is greatly appreciated. I looked at the Valentine but that is way over my price range. I also looked at the Cobra's but there are so many different models. Which model would you prefer?

I had a Whistler, and thought it was okay.

The only problem is that I never could get decent suction cups to keep the blasted thing on!

So, I don't use one anymore.

Obviously, the higher the price, the better the quality, but I don't think a Whistler is bad; however, I am not a "radar detector" guy, so you might want to take this with a grain of salt. :p

I can't remember the model name, but it seemed like it was a number like 1000 or something. I got it at Wal-Mart and it was a little over $100.

No I didn't, he says he doesn't know and I told him to look on the damn thing and he said he couldn't find the brand name. All he said was that he got it at the Wal-Mart on Parker. I'll have to take a look at it myself I guess.

The guy above made a very good statement though, police are using bother radar and laser detectors these days but I'm not sure if the JPD has those or not but I'm sure you could find out from...well you know. If they do I would get a laser/radar detector like he said.

Where all have you searched on the net?

    I still don't understand why they're legal.

    candycane,

The Whistler version that I had *supposedly* could detect laser as well.

Go to your local Wal-Mart and ask them where the radar detectors are and you will probably find the model that I had.

If you are pursued by a cop using laser, you are pretty much caught.

Again, this is not from personal experience, but from research.

The Beltronics top models detect laser.

I have found only one area in Austin that uses laser. Our cops are surprisingly technologically deficient.
