I have been thinking of this for a while, we have 4 of them in the house and I was wondering if it might be better to make my own. Also, if anyone has done it, how easy is it to control for your recorded shows etc? And can you get the upper reaches that you get on the cable boxes, say the 900s for the NBA League pass. What's "the 900s"? What I mean to ask is: does everyone have these same numbers? Isn't it different on different cable companies? --- Anyway --- Are you talking about a media server, or just external hard drive attached to a PC with a capture card?
I don't think so, since you can buy one for the cost of less than maybe a couple of cigarette packs. Now, DVRs and the TiVo service, those are worth making.
I have a capture card, but do you have to go from the Cable box to your TV? That would mean it would record what is being shown, but not necessarily other shows etc. Or can you go to your Capture card first then to the box, then to the TV, and capture on your TV. And can you select shows to record and do so, on a capture card? I have one that is about 4 years old.....oh, also are all cap cards HD? DD
I did with windows media center and it rocks!! Then, stupid comcast made the dta boxes mandatory and now it's doesn't work. I hate comcast so.
Look into a PC cablecard reader. I tried building a MythTV box about 4-5 years ago. The hardware I was using didn't want to cooperate. When I could get it working right, it was pretty neat, but it would bug out. I have a computer I may need to repurpose and try again with it. Win7 DVR capabilities are nice, but I don't like that it forces the DVR-MS format or whatever it is now (WTV?)

Something tells me you don't look for answers to your questions before coming here to ask. I mean, come now, dude... you work at a gaming company (or used to, or do, I don't know), and you're asking if "all cap cards HD"??? Anyway... No. Go to the PC you build as your own DVR or to the capture card directly. If it's digital cable and don't need a box, you don't need the TV. That's correct. TV's can't capture. Don't you mean on the DVR attached to the cable box? Then, yes. You don't do this "on the card", you do this on the program that shows the guide. Windows Media Center has a guide program already, or you can install an alternative. This should have come with Windows Media Center if bundled on the TV, or with its own DVR software No. Why would you want to record in SD if there are HD cards available? Hauppague HD-PVR works fantastic. You just need to have it connected to a PC via USB where you can schedule and handle your recordings (through the included software).
