Let's just say I have a job opportunity in Vegas here in the next month or so but I am a bit reluctant to move there. All my family is here in Texas but I am sick and tired of this humidity and would really like a change before I get into my 30's...

Anyone live in Vegas or has lived in Vegas?

If so, tell me why I should or should not make the move. ;)

    crow,
i always think about this. moving to vegas or the west coast for a change of scenery. you should try it. i might join you in a couple years! :)
plus if you are young, the party scene is unmatched. sorry midtown has nothing on the Palms or Tao or the Hard Rock.

It's a dream of mine to live a few years of my life in Vegas at some point. I visit all the time and I think you should give it a shot, because outside of the strip, it really is a nice city where people live normal lives.

I don't live and have never been to Vegas. But I've been to Phoenix, and areas around Vegas and if you are moving mainly from a weather / humidity standpoint...um, Vegas ain't that much better. Certainly not humid, but it gets damn hot, and damn dry.

I'm sure weather isn't your deciding factor, though, and as you mentioned, Houston ain't all that in the weather department.

Another thing to think about: Could you get a good job in other cities if you actually spent some time looking. Cause if so, and you are just looking for a change of scenery, pick out some other places you might be interested in looking at living, and see if you can get jobs there.

unless you're really liking the idea of Vegas for some reason...

See that's one of the things I miss about Houston. The humidity. I miss sweating profusely, but that's me.

I've been in Vegas for about 11 years after living in Houston for about 12. I was ready to go back to Houston after the first year and then again after the 4th year.

Almost every person I've met here had a stretch where they wanted to leave because it's so different from where they came from. I can't go to a Rocket game, can't find good Tex-Mex, the beach isn't an hour away and worst, my family and friends are over a 1,000 miles away. It's a bit more expensive than Houston and it takes time and effort to get used to.

BUT, if you love the sun year round than you'll love Vegas. It's a great place to be during Football season. If you really like to travel, you're not far from the Natl. parks of S. Utah/N. Arizona or the California coast. Something is always open.

I'm still here because I've been lucky to find a good job and meet some really good people. I also have learned to take time to get out of the valley when ever I get a chance. That is my golden rule. Whenever you get a chance, take a break from the valley, get out for a couple of days and then come back, hopefully, recharged.

The last I checked there isn't a bar that supports the Houston Texans. If you do move here, look for a bar that either supports them or another team you wouldn't mind watching on a Sunday. Usually the bar that supports the football team also supports the NBA, MLB or NHL team from the same city.

Good Luck, I hope everything works out for you.

Yes, but they're usually crowded, noisy and too smoky. I'd rather be in a bar with people rooting for my team. And a lot of bars have special food/drink prices and giveaways.

What he said...minus missing the humidity.

I've been in Vegas (Henderson) for about a year and a half, having moved from League City...and I absolutely love it. Like plcmts mentioned, there are some quirks about living here...but there's far more upside to Vegas than down. Fortunately for me, I have family here and in Los Angeles, so the move made sense...but for a co-worker who moved out here from Houston, it's not so easy, as he and his wife are out here alone...all of their family is back in Texas.

The weather...it's freakin' hot. But, IMO, 109 with 5% humidity is better than 95/95 in Houston. Plus, mosquitos are pretty much non-existant. Just watch out for the scorpions.

The food...Houston kills Vegas in regards to food. Buffets are overrated and there are no Taco Cabanas, WhatABurgers, Fuddruckers (although one is supposed to be here soon) or Pappadeaux (wife's favorite) out here. There are some pretty good restaurants (Claim Jumper, Lucille's) here, but as a whole, Vegas cannot compete.

The people...people in Vegas are not friendly at all. It's very difficult to find anyone who displays any sort of behavior that has any similarity at all to Southern hospitality. I guess the factor is that almost everyone here is from somewhere else. There's not too many native Las Vegans.

The housing market...extremely over-priced...but prices are falling. We sold our 2500+ sq ft home in LC for a little under $200k...the same size house here in a similar neighborhood goes for $550 to $600. So, unfortunately, we're renting for now, hoping that the prices will start declining. There is a massive excess of homes on the market right now...so hopefully things will start balancing themselves out soon.

Off-the-Strip Vegas...Henderson, North Las Vegas, Summerlin are all suburb areas that are similar to Houston's suburbs. They are extravagantly designed and decorated and have plenty of things to do away from casinos, hotels, clubs and the like.

Travel...almost every airline known to man has at least one flight into Vegas...so travel from Vegas to anywhere is extremely easy. Plus, a huge bonus is that there are some great places to visit within 5 to 7 hours drive from Vegas...Los Angeles (3.5 hours), San Diego (5.5 hours), Phoenix (5 hours), Reno (7 hours), St. George, Utah (??), and a ton of other geographic tourist areas (Lake Mead, Grand Canyon, Mount Charleston, Red Rock).

Schools...if you have grade school aged kids, beware. The schools here suck. And I mean they suck as bad as Utah Jazz fan does. There's massive teacher shortages right now (because most incoming teachers couldn't afford to live here on a teacher salary). Definitely do your homework (no pun intended ;)) before selecting a place to live.

Good luck if you decide to move here. It's truly a unique place to live. :)

You realize everything you said is true about moving anywhere outside Texas.. yes, things do change. All of this, plus most of what boomboom said, I could say about my experience moving to DC a few years ago.

So from that analysis...I'm guessing it might be a good move to move out to Vegas. No real negatives have shown up yet.

(as long as you're not expecting anything from your memories of visiting there...cause living there is surely nothing like visiting the Strip.. But I'm sure you know that much)

True....but like boom boom pointed out and something I noticed for the first 3-4 years but didn't mention is how people here can be very cold. Reserved might be a better word, but it tends to accentuate the loneliness that moving to a new town brings. A large portion of the people who live here are from somewhere else of course and to get over that loneliness they bring whatever they can from their "hometown" to make them feel more at home.

Like I said, I've known people who have left or wanted to leave because all they've known in their first couple of years here is how lonely a place like Vegas can be. When people move to Vegas, I can guarantee that that is the last thing on their mind, but eventually it becomes something you can't escape. With time it becomes less pronounced, but for many who come here it's just something they weren't ready to deal with.
