Any African American Impressionist from around the period of Monet and Manet? All I need is a name to get started. Thanks. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
go to ask.com or do a search in any search engine for that specific type of art, or art history or anything along those lines... rockHEAD ------------------ *** THIS SPACE FOR LEASE ***
PSJ, The only one that comes to mind is Romare Bearden. But I think he was on the cuff of Impressionists and modern. Leaning more towards the modern era. I'll see if I can rattle my brain for any others. ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
The problem with finding contemporaries of Monet is that Impressionism pretty much started in France in the mid 1800s. By the time it reached the US and started influencing American artists, I believe that 30 or 40 years had passed. early 1900s? Don't' quote me on this. Rimbaud could probably give you a better overview. ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
Thanks MC and rock. I'll look into those two painters and see what I can dig up. I've been having a lot of trouble finding anything. Your leads are very much appreciated. I'll keep you posted. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
mc mark, Bearden was not even born until the 20's, he is not really appropriate, or too impressionistic. The problem is, african american artists of the time of the Impressionists were not doing that type of work. Only the elite americans who traveled to paris were (Sargent, Cassat). William H. Johnson painted in the impressionist and post-impressionist style in the teens to twenties, he is probably the closest I can come up with. That is simply too hard a task. If there was an artist, he would be very remote and insignificant (as far as quality). ------------------ EZLN
Boy do I feel silly. PSJ, don't listen to any thing I say. ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
mc mark, Don't feel silly. If it makes you feel better, Bearden was actually born in the teens (I was going off of the top of my head). But he still does not fit stylistically. I'm impressed enough that you even about him. PSJ, Why are you undertaking this daunting task? I do know Tanner, but not too well - wouldn't consider him too helpful. ------------------ EZLN
The Smithsonian told me... "Although not strictly an Impressionist, I would suggest Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937). But you would be well served to read the last section of a four part publication entitled The Image of the Black in Western Art. It was written by Hugh Honour." ------------------ humble, but hungry.
A novel. I'm telling the story of an impressionist that traveled the Eastern Coast of America during the Civil War. Boston, Baltimore, Niagara, and DC. Any African American artists living in those states is a possible link and makes for great story telling. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
Theater Major - Art History Minor But years and beers have clouded my memory. Slamma that sounds like a great idea for a novel. Keep us posted... Get it? posted... ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.' [This message has been edited by mc mark (edited November 30, 2000).]
