Just curious if any sports bars showed wrestling PPVs in Houston.

    Any suggestions?

Have you tried calling around? That's me and a friend did and we found a place (in San Antonio). Expect a cover charge, though. Because of that, we just decided to order it on satelite anyways.

What? That sports bars will show a wrestling PPV? No, I'm not kidding.

No, I meant, you were kidding about watching that stuff, right?

Next you are going to tell me it is real!!!

I used to like wrestling back in the days of the WCCW and the Von Erichs.....but it has taken on a new level of drama, the testosterone soap opera.

They really need to have wrestling awards like the Emmy's.

At first I thought to not even honor your reply with one of my own, but I reconsidered.

Please don't insult my intelligence. Do you honestly think that wrestling fans believe wrestling is real? Are you that stupid? Wrestling is one of my favorite things to watch and it is every bit as scripted as Seinfeld, ER, Cheers, or whatever your favorite show happens to be. Every wrestling fan over the age of 12 knows this so please don't insult our intelligence with inane crap like "Wrestling is fake, don't you know that?"

And yes, I am serious about my original question. In the city where I went to college, the local sports bars showed all wrestling PPVs and they all sold out to standing room only.

Oh come on! Of course I know it's fake! Jeez, it doesn't even pretend to be otherwise. So what if it's a testosterone soap opera? It's amusing and entertaining and it's great to much in a group of wrestling fans. Don't like it? Don't watch it.

Okay, fair enough. Perhaps I went a bit overboard. I apologize, but you must realize the crap wrestling fans are SO tired of taking from non-fans. Asking us if we "know that it is not real" instantly gets us on the defensive. BTW, I don't know anyone who believes wrestling is real, and just about everyone I know is a wrestling fan.

Concerning the couple you were arguing with, I ask this: I what sense were you arguing the reality of wrestling? The people who ask that question need to know that "real" is relative:
Are the matches scripted and therefore not real?
Yes and no. The outcome of the match is pre-determined. The match itself is, for the most part, not choreographed prior to the match itself. The moves play themselves out in the ring, with each wrestler telling the other what to expect in a series of moves.

Wrestlers are not really "enemies," but are all really best friends.
Once again, yes and no. For the most part, most wrestlers are friends, but real rivalries and hatred (referred to as "heat") DO exist between them which have nothing to do with the story lines. For example, Sting and Vampiro in WCW do NOT like each other at all. I could go into details, if you like.

    The moves themselves are fake.
This one always baffels me. You cannot fake slamming someone into the mat or onto the ground. They teach you how to fall, of course. Any fighting technique will teach you how to fall to minimize impact. When there is heat between wrestlers, they will oftentimes try to hurt each other. For the most part, they're not trying to end each others careers, just let each other know that they don't like each other. For the most part, they're not trying to hurt each other, but scripted moves do take a toll on the body and they do hurt, whether you know how to fall or not.

    Some examples:
    1. Stone Cold has been out for nearly a year to to a real injury: a botched pile-driver by Owen Hart (who was killed in the ring) caused bone chips in Austin's neck. The injury was real and career threatening. From what I've read, while Stone Cold has been cleared by doctors to wrestle, he will (most likely) not have the same amount of matches that he once did, and there are certain moves (like pile drivers) that he can no longer take.

    2. The Beast Dan Severn, an Ultimate Fighting Champion, also suffered from a botched pile driver by Owen Hart. Dan Severn has retired from wrestling as a result.

    3. Darren Drozdov, known as Droz, is paralyzed from the neck down do to an injury caused by D'Lo Brown.

    4. Bad-Ass Billy Gunn is recovering from a separated shoulder, and there have been countless other similar injuries suffered by all professional athletes such as torn achilles, torn ACLs, etc.

In my mind, this sheds some light on the subject and should make people realize that if they want to ask whether or not wrestling is real, they should be more specific.

Concerning the testosterone-male-soap opera, I prefer it this way and I've been watching wrestling for over 15 years (I'm nearly 25 now). The story lines are what got me more interested in wrestling than I've ever been in my life. Since the industry has dropped the whole pretense that everything in wrestling is real, it has open new doors of interest for me. I love speculating on which twists and turns will happen next in a given story line. With the advent of the internet, insider information is readily available, as are the REAL injury reports and various fan-written editorials and all kinds of stuff.

I didn not mean to offend, but to question whether or not we know it is real is an insult to our intelligence. If you want to argue a particular aspect of the industry, thats fine, just cut the "its fake" crap and be more specific.

You're gonna love this one, Hoop-T. There IS a wrestling awards show called the "Slammies". Well, it might be "WAS an awards show", since I don't know if they exist anymore, but a local video store here used to have a Slammies tape...The tape was never checked out, and I would always walk by it, take a long gaze, and wonder if it was really worth shelling out two bucks to check out...

I always ended up gravitating towards the porno section, however...ahh, memories...

BTW, Lynus, not that I want to interrupt a good flame war, but Heartbreakers in Dickinson has Wrestling PPVs. I'm not certain about the minor ones, but they ALWAYS have the big ones like Wrestlemania, Summer Slam, and Halloween Havoc. Plus, it's a strip bar, so if the action in the ring gets boring, you can always watch the action on stage or in your lap...

I am not a NON-FAN persay, I still flip through and watch it here and there. But some of it just gets a little ridiculous in my opinion.

Now, I know these guys have to be in great physical shape to do what they do. I will not argue that they are athletes, or athletic to a certain extent. You can look at most of them and tell that. The things they do, lifting another 300+ man, falling from great heights onto (albeit rigged) tabel, etc., takes some talent and ability.

I honestly ran into a couple that were watching Monday Nitro at a bar a while back, and they were all into it. My buddy mentioned something about it being fake, and they turned to us and we got into a semi-heated discussion about it. The only thing they could come up with was, "Then why do they bleed?"

There are still some folks out there that believe. I guess that's ok. I just cannot get into all the outlandish story lines and such that go along with modern wrestling.
