I saw than ESPN Insider has an article on the Big 12, and that the recruiting class should be strong this year. I'm really curious to see who UT is focusing on. Usually, I don't ask for insider posts, but I just can't help myself this time. Any info from this insider report would be greatly appreciated! - thephatp
Try this thread: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=107006 Rivals.com (orangebloods.com goes straight to the UT site) is okay but you need to pay to read anything good. Insidetexas.com is much better, still requires membership, but has a free forum that has a ton of info. But here's a personal rundown of this year's recruiting class: 1. We have the #2 recruiting class in the nation right now, 2nd behind Florida. 2. I think we have 25 recruits that have verbally committed, 4-5 have already signed a letter of intent. Star recruits: 1. Sergio Kindle (LB)- Top 5 player in the entire country, best player in Texas hands down. Could possibly see a lot of time next year with Harris gone. 2. Jevean Snead (QB)- The Horns have been looking for their next QB and Snead is the best QB we've recruited since VY. Backed out of a verbal committment w/ Florida to come home to Texas. Word is that the starting job will be between him and Colt McCoy. 3. Eddie Jones (DE)- 5 Star defensive end who is a beast. 4. Deon Beasley (CB/WR)- Not sure where he'll play but he had a very nice showing at WR in the Army game. 5. Chykie Brown (CB)- 4 Star CB out of North Shore who is suppose to be badass. Also picked up a pair of 4 Star WRs in Phillip Payne and Montre Webber.
I think that's being quite generous. In terms of average stars, rivals has them tied for 6th with LSU and behind USC, UF, Penn State, Florida State and Michigan. You have to take into consideration the fact that different schools have different numbers of scholarships available in any given year.
Last year's class was small, which is why we have 25+ scholarship. Four are already enrolled this spring semester and if I'm correct those scholarships count towards last years recruiting class. Max per year is 25, though I could be wrong.
I was honestly about to put a "bigtexxx sighting in 3...2...1" before I submitted my post, but thought you wouldn't be that fast. Sorry I underestimated you. Texas was ranked #1 or #2 for most of the recruiting period, I believe USC just jumped in with a couple of suprise recruits. But we are a top 3 recruiting class for sure and since Rivals.com and other recruiting sites don't use the average number of stars to do their rankings, it is irrelevant. You were just trying to find any number that is lower than anyone elses. ESPN Has us ranked #3. Rivals.com Has us ranked #3 as well. Care to try again? And who cares how many scholarships colleges have to offer? As said above, we had a small class last season so we had more this season, just like if USC or whoever gave out a lot last season, they wouldn't have as much this season. Why do you try to negate every little thing about UT? The recruiting rankings have us at #3 and that's that, there is absolutely nothing you can do that says otherwise.
We'll really benefit from our National Championship next year. We must focus on the 5 star blue chip prospects- in and out of Texas. We've had some unbelievable low ranked sleepers (Michael Huff, Will Allen, David Thomas, Brian Robison) but it was the 5 star player- Vince Young who made the championship possible.
texxx, I don't have the energy to look it up, but weren't you decrying "average stars" as a recruiting measure last year, in order to bolster your T-shirt fandom of Texas A&M? (...which, I should add, must have gone rather awry this year given the depths of mediocrity to whihc that particular program sank)
Mack said in an interview w/ SI that we'll really see the effect of the Rose Bowl on next year's class. I think we'll still get 90% of our recruits from Texas, but we could see a lot of big out of state recruits come our way.
for some reason thinking of you telling that to Mack Brown made me laugh. ok mack, we wanna go for the really good players this time.
Sam I think both metrics have their merits, to be sure. Over time they will even out. Even if you just look at rivals' straight up rankings that don't differentiate for class size Texas is #3, which proves my point that gucci was being quite generous by claiming that they were higher that they really are.
Yeah I'd agree with this post. The 2002 UT-Austin class had 6 5-star players (rivals). However, two of those players weren't bright enough to make the grades, so really it was a 4 5-star class (actually 3 since Pickryl never made much of an impact before being permanently injured).
texxx, I summoned the energy reserves (essentially, by means of summoning Ifrit) in order to search your prior posts for the offending comment. In the post located towards the anterior medial portion of the following thread: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=88469&highlight=recruiting (apologies, the insert link function does not appear to work correctly with the latest version of firefox) you appear to be extolling the virtues of the Rivals.com (tm) ranking system, by means of total stars rather than average stars -- in fact, you go so far as to indicate that there is no "more credible" source to your knowledge than the Rivals.com (tm) ranking system. What has caused you to change your tune in the intervening year?
Sam, both metrics come from rivals, so they are both "rivals ranking systems". Secondly, I haven't changed my tune. I do not think that you can exclude the average star ranking, but the overall ranking is also important. In the long run the two even out as each school has an equal number of scholarships. Not really sure what point you're trying to make.
The point is that t-shirt fandom is not easy -- some days it's average, some days it's overall stars. But you know that.
After looking at the thread that you linked to, it looks like the Horn fans are the ones who have changed their tune to now focus on the overall ranking as opposed to the average star ranking that was so emphasized just a year ago. Wow, nice find, Sam!
big texx should be considered a UT recruiting expert. He used to pay for a subscription to orangebloods. He's a Rice/ou/atm/usc fan. He outed himself one day when he responded to a negative post about atm. When he was outed, the gist of his message was "damn right I'm not a ut fan. I only payed for this because......" He knows alot about UT, that's for sure.
