The guy (my cousin) who installed and administered our network was killed in a head-on collision two weeks ago. No-one else knows the network commands. We had a little scare with lightning yesterday; the queen bee's terminal went down and wouldn't book back up. I got lucky finding the login control and booting off network, running the login sequence, then re-connecting and rebooting. Presto! Looking for a tech for our next problem. Its 7 old win 98 machines, a dumpy old server box and 2 new machines, wired. Need to learn the admin controls and how to run remote backup. We need to transition to an xp network soon, I'm sure. We also have some accounting software (open systems) that runs on a middleware platform (bbx3). No telling how tricky that will be to port. Anyone have any advice or telephone numbers? Thanks. p
pasox2, I'm a MCNE. What do you need to know? Give me some descriptions like backup software, what version of NetWare, etc..
I run a Novell network here. I'm still a little green on Novell, but I know enough to get along. I also run an Active Directory network. The Novell network is XP clients connecting to Novell servers whereas the AD network is XP clients connecting to a 2003 Server. What do you need to know? I can also put you in contact with people who can help. email me
Thanks for the quick replys, guys. Coma, did you ever get to dance class? I hope so. I'm teaching again Sunday. I could teach you a little bit, basic stuff to get started. I'll contact y'all for some names and numbers, later. Thanks. I guess mostly we just need to be prepared for the thing to go down, and be able to bring it back up. So we need a little consulting. Also preparing to transition to new machines and to a MS network, so we can a) have newer faster terminals, and b) be able to service the damn thing ourselves in the future. Any other advice appreciated. Death sucks!
pasox2, Yes, I did start taking some classes. It's pretty awesome, so far. I'll try and make it out this Sunday. If the game ends early enough. As far as your NetWare server goes, if it goes down, if everything is configured properly, it should come up automatically. Perhaps some of your NLM's aren't called at startup, but the OS should come up fine. Another thing you might want to look at, is if server.exe is set to run in your autoexec.bat. If the server comes up and it's just sitting at a C:\, then you know autoexec.bat isn't calling your NW server. If that's the case, execute server.exe from your C:\nwserver. C:\nwserver is the default path for NW installs, but it might be different, depending on who set it up. I guess the next question is, why is going down? Hardware? Software? If it's abending, there's an abend.log file you can browse under the sys:system directory. Let me know what ver of NetWare you are running, and on what hardware platform. The easiest way to find your ver of NetWare, is at the system console, type in version. You'll know the system console by the black (or blue if older version) screen with the server name. ie. SERVERNAME: Good luck, and shoot me an email if you need anything.
I'd be available to help with an Active Directory migration. I'm currently working a side job right now helping my buddy migrate from NT4 to AD. sonny@caminus.com
