This all seems a little desperate and all but I figured I'd give it a try. I'm looking for a full time job that can at least pay me $13.00 at the minimum. I work in sugar land right now making $12.09 hr but I would like something better that can actually help support my family and allow us to have extra spending money. I live in Katy so I would hope for something not that far but if there's something out there that the money is right then I would mind traveling. Please let me know if y'all know anything. If you dont feel comfatable posting it on here maybe p.m. Thanks fellas

I hope you're more thorough in your job searches and interviews than you are in your forum posts :)
What sort of work are you looking for? What sort of work are you qualified for?

What have you already done or tried, so we don't mention it?

Well if you must know. lol. Well I currently work at a place were we distribute medicine around the states to different Hospitals. My title at my job is a Shipping Tech II/ Pre-pack specialist. So I would pre pack the product and then ship it through our carriers Fed Ex and UPS.

As far as certifications I have none. I do know how to drive a sitdown forklift but I haven't gotten a license for it.

Been at my job for two years. An the reason I would like to leave is cause there is NO growth within the company. The only way you can move up here is if someone leaves. Before this Job I worked in McDonalds for a while if you must know. LOL I worked as a cashier and moved my way up from that to a Swing Manager to a Shift Manager to a Asst. Manager in training.

If there's anything else I'm Missing let me know.

You have decent entry level experience and job stability.

I'd suggest applying for plant/refinery jobs in the Ship Channel area. If you aren't opposed to shift work and working outside 12 or more hours a day. Check out companies like ITC, Savage, The Mundy Companies, Inotek, SGS, Inspectorate America etc...

Look for chemical loader, railcar switchman, and/or inspector positions. These often are entry level and can pay $14-$18/hr with benefits and OT.

Even though the companies that I listed are plant contractors, the specific positions listed are essential to the plants' everyday operations and are just 'outsourced' to the contractors. Typically that makes them more stable and often permanent.

Plus, contractors work and interact directly with operators and other plant personnel. If you’re able to go to a junior college while working and get a Process Technology degree (P-Tech) and impress the right people you may be able to get on as an operator actually working for the plant making $30+/hr.

If you’re interested just Google those companies I gave you and find others like them. Go to the Houston Area Safety Council in Deer Park and get a Basic Plus Safety Certification, should cost >$40 and take about a half a day. Google ‘TWIC Card’ and, find your closest enrolment office, make an appointment and apply for one. Cost about $130 and it’s just a TSA background check needed to get access to areas around the Port of Houston and other ports around the country. These two things will probably put you ahead of 30-40% of the inexperienced people applying for those positions.

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy hunting.

This 1000x. You can make a lot of good money fast working at the plants but be prepared for the heat during the day or working late overnight.

Wrong, the only thing that makes this type of work unreasonably dangerous is complacency - As with any other blue collar job.

prolonged exposure to small air particulates are a problem if you are working in or near a refinery. nothing a proper ventiliation mask can't fix though

I've got 2 years experience as a petrochemical inspector and have a TWIC card, think that could get me a leg up anywhere or would I have to start over entry level?

That all sounds great I will look more into it once I get home. But just out of curiosity I don't know much about the oil industries but is there anything similar to that kinda work near Katy?
