Hackers target Houston business, and home users in scam

    By Cynthia Cisneros
    ABC13 Eyewitness News

(7/23/03 - HOUSTON) — Hackers could be using your personal computer to send p*rnography for profit and you may not even know it. The p*rn hackers are apparently using a local company's web server to access hundreds of PC's. Once they get through, they've got an open door to send p*rn and get people to pay for it.
Everyone's Internet officials say they were hijacked by the hackers. And even though they were able to stop the scam, it could still be going on with other servers.
It's something Robert Marsh says happens all the time. He's the owner of Everyone's Internet, and a division of it called Rack Shack and says dramatic is pervasive.

"Whether it's providers like Rack Shack, who are dealing with the abuse of our network, or whether it's on the Everyone's Internet side, where we're dealing with folks who're trying to abuse actual dial-up customers, it's something that happens every single day across the Internet, and only occasionally is it actually picked up in the media," claims Marsh.

Marsh says abuse happens on a daily basis, but it's the latest abuse that's caught national attention. Here is the latest hacker scam -- a hacker cracks into a web server, in this case Everyone's Internet, using a customer's personal computer as a vehicle to commit identity theft.

The Better Business Bureau is familiar with this scam and says hackers use the lure of a pornographic website to get potential customers to send in their credit card information.

Brent Rogers with the BBB Internet Development told Eyewitness News, "I compare it to a six-year-old with a Ferrari. They can get in a lot of trouble with it. You have to take responsibility and install a personal firewall and take some different security measures that are built in to some of these powerful new operating systems."

When Marsh found out about the hackers hijacking his web server, he says the illegal activity was stopped immediately.

"In terms of involving the specific servers that were in question at Rack Shack, absolutely," Marsh promised. "However, whether that scam has reincarnated itself on one of our competitors, or if it has reincarnated itself on one of our Rack Shack customers, that we haven't yet been made aware of."

Evem though Everyone's Internet was able to stop the hackers, the scam could be going on in other servers. That's just something that consumers are going to need to be aware of and take appropriate precautions.

As for the FBI, they say they are aware of the scam, but have not yet opened an investigation. But because of our story, they say they are taking a closer look at this scam.

I use EV1 dial up at home, I guess I'd better get a firewall.

BTW, if you give your credit card information to a p*rn site, you get what you deserve. There's plenty of free p*rn out there ERRR, UHH p*rn is disgusting!

My mom uses it at home, and I just happen to know her password. My company started blocking all BBS's recently, so I use her account to dial up at work to get to this site.

Like most ISP's, they don't allow concurrent logons under the same user ID, so I bet it's really pissing my mom off when she can't log on. Maybe I should tell her....

Wow, you'd think that everyone would be posting in here. What misleading company name.
