or have you been working on getting a teaching licensure?

I am thinking about getting into the field of secondary education. I live in VA. I am wondering about how long it would take to finish the program and get a license... and about how much would it take?

I already set up an appointment to meet with an advisor next wweek. but I just can't wait to get more info. :p

I would appreciate any of you can provide any information on becoming a secondary school teacher. :)

    requirements vary by state.

if virginia is similar to texas than you should have a degree in the subject you want to teach and than you will have to do student teaching and take some extra education/adolescent development classes. all in all, its about 2 extra years of school AFTER you get your b.a.

if you want to teach elementary school than you actually major in education, as opposed to the subject you intend to teach.

if you dont have a college degree than your only other option might be some emergency certification program. you take night classes while teaching during the day. again though, every state has different rules and requirements.

    It depends...

Really, all you need is at the State Board of Educator Certification website

Do you have a college degree? If you don't, check with an academic advisor in your college (sounds like you're already going that route). For others interested in the subject, but who already have a degree, look into ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION (Sometimes called "accelerated certification").

Here is some info about certification at region 4's website, which includes all of Houston.

Check with the regional education service center where you want to teach. There are 20 different regions in Texas.

There is a SECONDARY school? I wonder if Steve Jackson is still teaching. I bet Chris Dishman, Marcus Roberson, Samari Rolle or Steve Atwater teach at all. :D

    Meh. I got nothing. :(

This really IS a great topic. But WHY secondary, why not elementary or college?

Thank you all for the info. :)

I already got a degree... 2 more years seem a lot. I am hoping I can get it done in 2 semesters.

I guess I just have to really talk with the advisor person.

I don't want to teach elementary because I don't want to deal with those little kids. And college, the requirement is too much. I would love to teach college if I can get a ph.D. one day.
