I guess Tim Donaghy is making the radio rounds to promote this new book and he was interviewed by Dan Patrick today. It was most fascinating especially his involvment with organized crime. However, what was most fascinating, he discussed how the league manipulated game. One example, he was an alternate for the Rockets-Mavs 2005 playoff series (meaning he got to sit in on all the referee meetings even though he did not actually ref the games). The Rockets were up in that series and Mark Cuban was complaining loudly so the league sent a rep down to the ref meetings and told them to call more illegal screens on Yao and traveling calls on McGrady- basically making potentially game-swinging calls to appease Mark Cuban and the league. Yao and TMac were robbed that year - imagine if they had gotten out of the first round...

This is old news but I doubt the refs had anything to do with the rockets losing that series.

I hate to think about this series. We were not expected to win, let alone go up 2-0 heading back home. One of my favorite Rocket teams of all time. From Yao, T-Mac, all the way to Jon Barry and even The Germanator, Ryan Bowen. It was just two "stars" and a bunch of outcast. I love the Rockets! We could lose 82 games in a row and I'd still be here.

I heard it too. The Yao incident was the only specific example Tim brought up which I thought was significant.

It will get your Rocket blood boiling again just listening to it.

Jason Terry probably had more to do with us losing game three and Four at least then a couple illegal screen calls. We simply didnt have the peremiter defense that we have now with Battier and Ariza on the wings. man i would love to smack that stupid looking smirk off of his face and that stupid "jet" thing he does when he makes a shot. What an ASS.

Huh? The ref was saying that it happened?

I highly doubt the Michael Finley non-call was intentional. It was just too blatantly stupid.

I have no doubt that the refs manipulate the Kings/Lakers series. I remember time after time, the refs keep letting Bryant go to the foul line even though there is hardly any contact being generated. At the time, the Lakers were behind and in dangerous of losing....but the refs always give him the benefit of the call EVEN THOUGH they're playing at Arco.

He's trying to sell books. He also made the claim back when he originally got busted, when he basically tried to throw the NBA under the bus to save his own skin. He made claims like this about every series that's been controversial in recent years. I don't know if I buy it, given that he's had incentive to lie about it and given what he himself did when he was a ref.

I haven't read his book, so I don't know what his claims are, but I definitely do think the refs alters the game sometimes. Just watch the Lakers-Suns series. Kobe gets away with so many carries, Odom with illegal inbound plays, and tons of noncalls on Nash. Sometimes the call does go the Suns' way, but overall, I was given the impression that the refs were favoring the Lakers.

I wouldn't say the game was decided because of it though. Gasol was unstoppable in the paint and Artest shot surprisingly well. The Suns also turned the ball over way too many times.

This doesn't make what the refs are doing right either. Favoring one team is simply cheating.

If a ref couldn't control his anger and threw a ball at a fan, imagine what happens when a player piss him off.

It is interesting the wonder about, though Donaghy has less than zero credibility.

Look NBA refs are just horrible. I never believed what Donaghy said and if yao was setting illegal picks why wasn't it called in the first place.

So what im basically trying to say is that NBA refs make bullshi*t calls but they call it on both teams.

Let's be fair - you can't pin game 7 on the refs, we drove the last nail into our own coffin. There were some earlier games though, where it was questionable.
