I bought a new Ford Explorer Sport back in August, and I honestly like it a lot. However, with gas prices skyrocketing, I'm thinking of trading it in for a car, especially since I have at least three 1500+ mile road trips planned through July or so. I just got back from the Honda place and found a great looking new Accord for a great price, so I'm planning on going back tomorrow to test drive and find out what I could get for a trade in, etc.

Just wondering if anyone had a new one or knew of anyone that had one? I used to have an '89 Accord, and I absolutely loved it and the gas mileage.

I test drove the new Accord, and was very impressed. I have two Honda Accord, but the new model is much improved.

The engine is bigger, and the car feels much tighter. I felt like I was driving a German car, like a Jetta. I think you will be impressed.

I agree with you that buying a car that gets good gas mileage is the right thing to do. It is good for your pocket book, and good for our country.

    Here's a stupid question, but I'm a stupid guy:

OK, I obviously haven't paid off my Explorer yet...how does that work if I want to trade it in? They just tell me what it's worth, and then if there's a difference in what it's worth and what I still owe, that's applied to the new car, right?

So your Explorer is 6 months old? I bet you don't have any equity in it. :( So, let's say you owe 16,000 on your not but your Explorer is worth only 15,000 or that's what the dealer gave you. They would tack that extra thousand onto the price of the Accord.

Speaking of which, I've only been employed for a month or so, but I've made 3000 in February already. I don't get alot of that till August. How would I prove my income if I wnat to buy a vehicle? I wanna trade my truck for a car.

You are gonna lose a lot of money trading in a car you just bought. Cars depreciate quickly, the dealer won't give you much for it.

Why do you need to prove your income? They basically look at your credit score to see if they want to give you a loan. They do ask for income level, but they don't ask for any proof.

Hey! I'm planning on getting a new car sometime in the next three months, and that is at the top of my list! Don't really like the way the 2003 sedans look, but the coupes are sweet. The 240-hp V6 would be nice, but I don't know if I can afford it. Not sure if there's a better car in that price range (18-25k). I know people who have test driven it and were very impressed.

Yeah, I'm guessing my payments would increase, but it's worth my time to go see, I guess.

The one up here had a sedan, which I want, V-6 automatic with leather and a in-dash 6 disc CD player for $22,500.

RM95, you should have waited for the Ford Escape Hybrid. Don't know when it comes out though, so I guess you didn't have a chance if you need a car now.

 That's a VERY good deal. The Honda website prices that same car at almost $26,000.

I know. I've been fiddling around with the numbers and it depending on what kind of APR I can get or how much I can talk them down, I might be able to get it for a little more than my current payments. However, I'd save more in gas money.

Too much, apparently, if he's looking at buying a new car again! :D

    RM95 - check out the Mazda 6.

It has a V6 220hp automatic, leather, sun roof with a MSRP at 22-23k. Plus it has a 4yr 50k warranty.

I am in the same boat as you as far as trade in goes, I owe to much right now, but I have a good chunk of cash to put down. As soon as Mazda comes out with a good financing deal I will get one. I currently have a 2000 camaro SS that gets 17-20mpg and I have to put premium in it

I got my wife's Mazda Protege last July on a No payments until 2003 with 0% for 60 months, if they do that deal again I will have my Mazda 6. Also it has the automatic tranny that you can manually switch gears in (sportstronic?). It's a sweat car that should be cheaper than the Accord with better features.

I'd do it Rocketman95, My 2002 Jeep liberty is a pleasure and all, but don't think I haven't thought about trading it in for a Honda...Those cars are great! But you know me, I gotta have that "outdoor" persona in my vehicle. Too bad I can't afford a Hummer...still there is a practical side to me.

Well, I'm gonna go in tomorrow and see what happens. I figure I'll save a minimum of $25 a month in gas and at least $65 on our first road trip to North Carolina next month.

Here's another question. Have any of you gone from an SUV to a car, and how long did it take you to adjust?

I just switched from a Jeep to an Infiniti G35. I miss being able to drive off curbs and intimidate smaller, easily frightened drivers....but I love my new car. Comfort and style over size.

Adjustment period: one week. You gotta get used to being lower and not being able to see the source of the traffic.

I get tired of driving my big Dodge Ram. It's too hard to park also.
