In particular, I am looking for information on shipping a large crate (standard 20 footer) from Europe to the USA.

Anyone done this before or have advice/recommendations?

Find a good broker to do the work for you. UTI and CH Robinson come to mind. It's a pain in the ass to do your self if you don't know what you're doing. Pay someone to do it for you.

Do those places work with single-shipment residential customers? They appear to be large-scale supply chain types...

In that case, FedEx or UPS have these kinds of services.

They'll be the way to go because they can get your stuff through customs easier. Is it an actual wood crate? You will probably want to transfer that to a metal container if so. I don't think they'll take wood on the ships...unless you're looking to air freight. Ships are about 4 weeks from port to delivery. Air freight would be about a week and well over $10,000.

    Well, that's hilariously obvious. Thanks!
