I have a 728 meg XVID file that i normally wanted to put on VCD (CD-R) but of course it's too large to fit, so then I tried to find a good xvid splitter so i can make the file into two CDs which i haven't been successful at finding, so now I guess i'll spare a DVD-R to try and burn the Xvid to DVD-R... anyone with experience in doing this?

You can just burn it to the DVD as a DVD-ROM, and it's exactly the same process as burning to a CD-R.

If you want to be able to watch it on your DVD player, well that's a much larger endeavor.

    thanks, i'll try that one...

Edit: No luck, it says "unable to source file" I guess thats an error and meaning "Unable to load source file".... any other suggestions? I checked the properties and it is indeed an XVid codec with mpeg layer-3 audio

I've heard that this works, though I've never tried it because I don't have a DVD burner yet.

If you try it, let us know! I was wondering if it works with Xvid movies. I think they're essentially the same as DivX.

I want to convert wmv to I guess whatever it takes to burn it on a playable DVD. Will WinAvi convert from .wmv to mpeg-2?

I have lots of experience burning divx to DVD-R. If you want to know all the details, go to www.videohelp.com There are tons of guides and free tools etc.

Here is my 5 minute tutorial.

    1. Download Tmpgenc video encoder
    2. Download Gspot Codec Appliance
    3. Open Gspot and use it to analyze your divx file - you will need to remember the frame rate and the aspect ratio. Go to Videohelp and do a search to figure out what format your framerate and aspect ration correspond too (i.e NTSC/PAL and Widescreen/Normal)
    4. Open TMPgenc and use the wizard/templates
    5. Select the appropriate DVD template (NTSC/DVD etc)
    6. Select MP2 Audio (may not give the best results, but it is the easiest)
    7. Follow the instructions of the wizard
    8. When you get to the screen where it asks you to enter the bitrate, choose one that gives you about 70% of a ful DVD. THis is to allow room for the audio if it is converted to PCI. Bitrate is important and it determines overal quality - once again videohelp has a lot of info and a bit rate calculator you can use if interested.
    9. TMPGenc will take anywhere from 2 - 6 hours to convert the file.
    10. When done, use a DVD authoring program like Sonic MyDVD to create and burn the DVD using your newly created MPG.

Good luck. I have done that process many times and it can be time consuming. Hence, I just bought myself a divx/dvde player lat week which allows you to skip steps 1-9, and you can fit 5 or so movies on a single dvd!

I was thinking about buying one of these divx dvd players. How is the search feature when watching divx movies? Obviously, you don't have chapters within the divx file, but does the dvd player have a 10 min skip or search feature?
