I've got a web site that I've decided to market. I've set aside a sizeable chunk of money for the project (sizeable to me, at least).

Has anyone successfully marketed a web site? I've heard that you can get consideration for listing on Yahoo!'s directory for $300/year. Is it worth it? Has anyone done this? Does it result in a spike in traffic?

I get about 125 hits a day on my site. I want to increase that to around 750-1000 per day.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone can put suggestions or links in here that would be great. I'm trying for a medical audience myself. I'm on all the Searchengines as far as I know, but any additional ideas could prove useful rather than having to pay for them. Much thanks.

I have a bit of experience in this, so I thought I would move out of lurk mode and try to help.

I think that I have spent money on just about every online and offline type of advertsing over the years promoting my websites.

I can only speak toward business sites where the intent is to sell a product, but the key for me has been to closely watch the return on investment. I have ran ad campaigns that were close to $30,000 per month that generated a tremendous amount of traffic but profits that were about 1/2 what was expected so I wouldn't judge your promotions success by traffic alone.

The first thing that I look for when we launch a new site is to determine the keywords that people are looking for to find your product or service with. You can use the keyword tool on overture.com or a free trial on wordtracker.com. Your best bet is often not what you expect - an example for would be a garden related product - rather than spend a lot of $ on advertising to promote "garden" or "gardening" you would normally be better served promoting your specific niche product; i.e. "gardening widget".

Overture.com and Google "adwords" return the best on investment if you choose your markets and keywords carefully. Be careful of the overpriced bids on overture for some words.

Recently I cut our advertising on overture for one site by almost $15,000 per month by bailing on some very competitive keywords but found that I had been an idiot for years when our sales didn't drop at all on that site.

The absolute best resource on promoting websites that I have found is webmasterworld.com - it is a free site although the subscription area is filled with webmasters generating obscene amounts of money.

good luck on your website (unless you are a competitor ;) )

    Thanks for the info powerchuter.

The web site I want to market does not sell products. Instead, its a sports web site I created, filled with personally written editorial columns.

It's by no means a money making scheme. I plan to lose all the money I invest. My sole goal is to get exposure for my web site and my writing.

    Thanks!

    Man: check the sig.

You would still find a lot of useful information on search engine positioning and promotion at webmasterworld.com.

Since you are writing articles you might also consider creativecommons.org. Content writers post articles for websites looking for content - in return for putting your article on their sites they put a link to your site at the bottom of the article.

This gets your site exposure for free and provides you with quality inbound text links which is one of the main keys to top rankings on google.

You could still run an ad campaign through google adwords carefully choosing you niche keywords for as little as a couple of bucks a day and get a quality traffic boost.

Hehe. I like the Popeye section. :D

dont think paying 300 bucks is worth it. there are way too many sports websites. even if you pay 300 bucks you prolly wont be listed very high.

i think you should post in a bunch of forums with a link to your site in your signature or profile. ;)

you could also send your writing to newspapers or magazines.

just create interesting content and keep it updated...

drapg once you start getting the traffic make sure to put a couple of ads. ;)

I've got a friend who has had a good return using Google's AdSense.

    http://www.google.com/adsense

They taylor their ads to your site (sports).

Anyone is welcome to add a free link to any website here:

    http://login.vsoftdev.net

Post the same requests for information at places like webmasterworld.com (as suggested)

    or my new forum:

    http://www.seoverboard.com

Using a variety of methods works best. Search Engine submission, pay-per-click, link exchanges, posting in forums, etc.

drapg, I'll be the first person to buy a g-sports T-shirt, if you ever get a merchandise section...just as long as it doesn't have a pic of Popeye Jones on it...

    That's actually pretty funny.

I'm running in the Houston Marathon this year, and I was planning to design a t-shirt, sort of a free advertising ploy.

    Nope, no Popeye though.
