It seems to be coming up among friends of my son as a place to go if they decide that UT is too large. I never heard of the place till recently. It seems pretty good acdemically.

Has anyone ever been there or know anything about it?

Very small school in a very neat little town.

    Very highly thought of academically.

If your son decides to go there, he will enjoy it, but its pretty expensive.

I think the school has like 5,000 total, if that many.

I am pretty sure it is smaller than that.

Anyway, it is definitely a good school - one of the best LA schools in the country, and fairly well known among the right people. However, if one doesn't like small towns and needs a lot of action on nights and weekends, then it would not be a good place.

I would have gone there for free, so I don't know about tuition since I never had to lok it up.

My brother in law went there and I went to his graduation. Very good liberal arts school and overall a very positive experience--but it isn't going to carry the weight (after school connections or instant credibility) of Stanford or Rice. Of course this shows my bias, that if you are going to pay private tuition levels--you want the connections and the weight along with the quality, teacher intensive, education. Of course Southwestern isn't without its connections and some weight either--especially if law school afterward is likely.

Also, I think it is much smaller than 5000--it seemed to me the senior graduating class was more like 500 (thus 2000-2500 total students)--but I could be wrong. On the expense issue--that can be reduced at Southwestern and many other schools like it depending on academic and family qualifications--be sure to ask for a total package offer and compare to other alternatives.
