i saw woot.com had one for sale today and i had never even heard of them until now. the reviews seem good and i know they aren't "maintenance free" like how some seem to try to sell them. any reviews from you guys on cf.net?

My dad has one in his house...The water feels great, never get that chlorine feel in your eyes, hair or body. I don’t think it’s as strong as pure chlorine though. If you get one of these make sure to always keep your pool clean. Its easier to loose control with these types of systems. Once my mom used a lot of body/sun tan lotion before entering the pool and the entire pool became contaminated and we had to drain all the water and clean the filters because the bacteria got in there too. But if your good about keeping up with the maintenance, it’s a great system.

I'd also add that you're skin feels better after getting out. Worth the conversion.

I just purchased one for my new house. It's being installed next Thursday. I'll let you know.

I have been in a saline pool and it totally rules.

i think the only major drawback that i have read is that the salt can be corrosive in plaster pools. also, i read that the longevity of the chlorine generator can be short in some brands. i'm gonna call a pool guy up today and ask them.

One month in and I'm completely sold on the salt water pool. The chlorine generator works flawlessly. It's about as maintenance-free as a pool could be. I've added 2 cups of acid so far...and that's all. The pH tends to get a bit alkaline in saline pools, so you have to add a bit of muratic acid about once a month.
It's so refreshing to NOT have to deal with that caustic chlorine anymore.
    And the water feels GREAT!

Seriously. If you have a pool, consider saline.

How much does it generally cost to get a basic, in-ground pool installed in your home? Not that I am looking for one at the moment, but I would consider once I buy a house.

Oh, I didn't know salt water pools were in reality. I saw a sign advertising a "salt water pool" but I thought it was just a joke. Is it like swimming in the ocean?

No, it's not like swimming in the ocean. You can barely even taste the salt. Plus there are no sharks and stupid hermit crabs to step on, so there's that.

I'm guessing they are looking at more exotic ones. Do you know how much a basic one costs?

I remember my friend had a pool and his dad just dumped regular old iodized table salt in the pool. The water messed up your skin and don't even get me started on what it did to my eyes.

Dude, there's no comparison. I paid somebody to install mine. However, if you have any confidence in your ability to cut PVC pipe (and reconnect it) -- and have even a cursory knowledge of electrical wiring -- it wouldn't be hard to do it yourself. Now that I've seen it done, I would help any of my friends install the system.
    Good luck.

You can get one anywhere from 5k to 15k for a decent basic pool... Ofcourse teh price goes up the more options you add to it.

DaDa likes to make one liners that show off how rich he is. More power to him, but it annoys me.

We put in a reasonable sized pool with a fair amount of decking 3 summers ago. It cost $40,000 at the time. That is probably low for what you would pay now.
