I am by no means a computer expert, so please dont laugh at my stupidity....

My new work laptop has the intel centrino chip. At home, my personal laptop uses a Linsys card toconnect to the net wirelessly, so I have the wireless network already set-up at home. I'd like to use ths network to connect my work computer to my home network, but it doesn't seem to recognize a signal. The wireless network connection in available and supposedly enabled.

If I can't get it to work, I'll probably just take my cheap butt to the store and get a LinkSys card for my work computer, but i I can avoid it, I'd like to.

    Any starter suggestions?

    Thanks

hmm, i have a centrino and it picks up random signals and connects me to them all the time. There should be a menu you can access on your taskbar that allows you to see all the different wireless connections that your centrino is picking up, then you just click on that one and set it to be your default. i have a fujitsu with windows xp, so it might be different on your model (but shouldnt be). if your network thing is crossed out or there are no connections available, then one or both of the things is not working.

    hope that helps.

Could be that your home network is a G type and the Centrino a B type.

Hmmm...if only i knew what that meant....;)

is that something i can change, or is it an inherent characteristic of the chip/network?

does anyone know if it possible to install a centrino chip into a notebook that already has a p4. It pisses me off to know that I paid 1800 for a notebook that is dirt comptared to the new chip that came out like a week later.

The whole Centrino Technology thing is actually misleading...

The ads show how you can "connect" to the internet from anywhere (like Mt. Everest?!?), whereas in reality, you need to be in a place that's broadcasting a signal (ie, a 'hotspot').

These signals can be recieved by any computer that's equipped with a wireless LAN card, or has a built-in wireless adapter... not just centrino computers.

The Centrino Technology refers to the fact that Intel combines the wireless LAN with a different type of chip that allows them to make computers lighter, smaller, and have extended battery life.

Thus, its the physicalities of the computer itself (battery life, size) that embody the Centrino technology, NOT the internet connectivity... which can be done with virtually any laptop as long as you have a wireless card.
