I don't know why, but for some reason I've never liked the team name. It just seems so kitschy, like something you see on Saturday Morning cartoons. I prefer more stoic names like the Texans or Celtics. Names like Bobcats, Hawks, Magic, Rockets seem to fall in the same camp.

    I think I got it....

He would probably suggest the "HOUSTON HOTBALLA'S"

Think about it....it would be stoic, in a streetball way.

    You know what's funny hotballa....

Most people think that "stoic" name our football team has, the Texans, is a weak nickname.

"Rockets" is one of the better team names I've heard. There are a lot of crappy team names out there like:

    Bucks
Clippers (what the heck is a clipper?)
    Jazz

Do you know the origin of the name Rockets? As well as Astronauts, Comets, Aeros, etc.?

A clipper is a ship. When they were in San Diego they were the clippers. Just like the Rockets name came from San Diego.

I think the 'Texans' is one of the worst names ever. I don't think the Rockets is a great name either, but you know what? When it gets right down to it, I don't think there are very many team names I do REALLY like. Some of them might not be bad if it weren't for the fact the franchise moved and they kept the same name. These two have always REALLY bothered me:

Utah Jazz: It makes NO sense. In New Orleans it was a fantastic name, in Utah it's just funny. I think they should change their name to the Utah Magic Underwears.

Los Angeles Lakers: Perhaps when they were in Minnisota this was one of the stoic names Hotballa speaks of, however, in a state in which there is not a single lake that isn't man made, this is just stupid.

I know we were originally the San Diego Rockets, but moving here actually made the name make more sense with Nasa nearby.

Other names I've always that were strange:

the Sonics: I don't even know what a sonic is. I guess they're fast.

The Milwaukee Bucks: Around here, bucks are shot and hung on the wall. Not to mention, if the Bucks ever made it to the playoffs, it seems obvious the opposing fans are always going to have signs that say "The Bucks stop here." That would have to be ALMOST as annoying as "Houston, we have a problem." Ok, no. Nothing is that annoying.

The Toronto Raptors: This has to be the worst name in the NBA. Jurassic Park is a box office smash around the time of the franchise so they name their damn franchise after a friggin' dinosaur. Are you kidding me? Everytime I think about this, it still makes me cringe.

You know what? I just realized I could write a book about this topic, and I think that may be a sign that there is something screwy going on in my head. I'm going to go see my therapist. Talk to you guys later.

The "Texans" are a good name? It's one of the most generic unimaginative names of all time. The Rockets are all right. And it's got decades of history behind it. You just don't change something like that for no reason.

We could shorten it to Rocks. It doesn't get any older than that.

The full name is still the Seattle Super Sonics. They were named in part due to the huge Boeing facility that employed many people in the Seattle area.

    Absolutely agree!
As for the name of the Rockets having some flaw, of any sort, I can only reply to the thread starter (with all due respect), are you nuts??

Maybe we could keep the space theme and go with the Challengers... :D

I've privately lobbied for the Jazz to become the Utah Pioneers.
