Anyone else think it's going to end up being Donyell Marshall?

I knew it would be Ward last year and I am equally sure it will be Donyell Marshall this year.

    Exciting?

    No.

But it might end up being the best thing as long as CD doesn't hand him one of his patented ridiculously r****ded contracts.

(Which, by the way, I expect he will!)

Swift ain't coming. Walker is going someplace else also. Sure would have been nice to draft Simien!

    Rant over. Carry on.

Nope. I actually believe it's going to be Swift. Carry on with your pessimism.

Signing DM for 2 yrs with a TO for year 3 wouldn't surprise me if Swift doesn't come here.

Getting Marshall isn't being pessimistic. I actually think he might be a better option for this team than Stromile Swift as long as he can be had cheaply and for no more than 2-3 years.

Marshall would be a much safer signing if done right. Swift has more upside but to me Marshall might fit in better with the current team.

I will admit to being pessimistic about CD though....

I want Swift because he can be a building block. But if we cant get Swift, Marshall isnt too bad to bolster the PF position.

Sounds like Marshall is just sitting back waiting in the wings to see the details of the new contracts for SAR, Swift and Walker. I'm sure the losers in the pursuit of those guys will throw full MLE money Donyell's way and he probably knows it.

I totally agree. Marshall looks to be the consilation prize for a number of teams....although Washington is supposedly talking to him this weekend.

I was thoroughly unaware we used Ward as our starting PG for most of last season. If only we had signed a competent PG who could have given us 10-5-5 every night.

When will CD ever do anything right?!

I would love to get them both. Howard's health is iffy, and Marshall can back up both the SF and the PF position.

Sign-and-trade: Swift (7M) + Jason Williams for Weatherspoon, Baker, Moochie and a second-round draft pick
Then sign Marshall for two years with a team option for a third year with the MLE
Then sign Dikembe, Jon Barry, and maybe Padgett and MAYBE van Exel to vet minimum contracts.

Sign Dion Glover or maybe Baxter or Ryan Bowen to non-guaranteed contracts.

Consider cutting Howard under the "Finley/Allan Houston" rule.

    Cut Ward outright.

Consider picking up Allan Houston for the vet minimum if he gets cut by NY. We always need good spot-up shooters.

    Roster:
PG: Jason Williams, Mike James (van Exel?)
SG: (Allan Houston?), Sura, Head, Wesley
SF: T-Mac, Jon Barry, (Glover or Bowen or Padgett)
    PF: Swift, Marshall, (Baxter)
    C: Yao, Mutombo

Later in the season, one could still try to trade Wesley for a taller and athletic young guard.

    Just playing around a bit.

All I am trying to say is it would be nice to have both Swift and Marshall - Swift for the atleticism and shot-blocking, Marshall for three-point shoting and rebounding :).

This is basicly my mode of thinking. Swift is quicker and a better shot blocker. He also has the potential to be a better rebounder than Marshall, although, Marshall has the rebounding edge currently. Swift is quicker which would help with weak side defense/shot blocking to help Yao. Marshall has more range but he is much older. They both have their pros and cons but I believe Swift's pros currently outweigh Marshall's in terms of what we need from our PF position. McGrady/Yao/Swift could be the backbone of our team for the next 5-6 years and grow together, while Donyell is much closer towards the end of his career. I mean, can anyone name a better frontcourt than:

    Yao Ming
    7'6 310
    3 years in the NBA
    18.3 8.40

    Stromile Swift
    6'9 230
    5 years in the NBA
    10.1 4.60

    Tracy McGrady
    6'8 203
    8 Years in NBA
    25.7 6.20 5.7

With that as a frontline, we would only have to fill out our backcourt with players who know their role which is a moderately difficult job to do. Who would want to play us? Answer: Nobody.

Actually, I don't think Marshall would be a bad pick-up.

Last season, he averaged 11.5 PPG in only 25.3 MPG. He also had about 7 RPG and a pretty good 3-point percentage.

    We could definitely do worse.

    Another interesting bit of information:
In 2003-04 he was the only player in the NBA to rank in the Top 25 in rebounds (9.9 rpg), blocks (1.51 bpg) and three-point field goal percentage (.403)

Marshall is a better fit than Swift and much more established, too bad he's getting up there in years.

If the Rox "had to settle" for Marshall, I would not be upset at all.

I think DM is our 3rd choice if Swift choose another team and Boston wants something unreasonable for Walker.

I'd be OK with DM, we would probably have to do a 4 year MLE. We could get in a sticky situation 2-3 years out with him and Howard approaching 35 with pretty good sized contracts. DM might actually be the most complimentary of the available 4s, for the next year or two, however.

Because of age I'd rather look to Swift, Walker, and SAR first. I'd actually like SAR as 2nd choice after Swift, but he does not appear on our radar. DM is a fine stopgap, but he defintely is a fall back pick to me.

I still like our chances for Swift (good 50/50), and then for Walker if Swift goes elsewhere. I think there is like a 80% chance we get one of these two or DM, which would complete most of our offseason work.

Is it possible to get them both? It wouldn't hurt to have both Marshall and Swift.

After hearing about T-Mac's recruitment of Stro I would definitely be disappointed if we weren't able to acquire him...and apparently T-Mac would as well, so it would be nice to offer him the team he believes has the most prowess. I'd say T-Mac could determine better than most of us what would help this team out the most...and he says Stromile

Is he actually a good building block considering he did not really grow with the Grizzlies?

I'd be happy with Marshall. He's a solid player.
