Leaveing new York on the 22nd. Flying into New Orleans to spend one night in the French quarter then renting a car to drive to houston. We'll be there until the 29th!

I can't wait! Going to see my brother, sister, inlaws and old college friends! Going to try and twist my friend's arm that works for the summit for some game tics against Seattle on the 27th! Its been two years since I've been in good Ol' H-town.

Anyone else coming home for Christmas?

It doesn't have to be Houston. Are you just going Home?

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

I'll be driving down Friday. THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYONE DRIVING LESS THAN 80 IN THE LEFT LANE. GET OUT OF MY WAY.

    Ha!

It really is nice to only be three hours away from my parents.

Come on, mark, it is the Compaq Center now, the Summit is gone. [IMG]

Also, don't forget to look at the Williams Tower, not the Transco.

I hate all of this change.

I am home, so I am staying home. I wish I could see a Rockets game, though. It has been about 2+ years (and that was a game in Dallas).

    So sad.

    Brian,

You'll be coming down 290 right? Whew! I'll be on I-10.

    Rimy!

    Where you been?

You are, of course, right! Compaq Ctr, Compaq Ctr. I gotta keep sayin it!

"I hate all of this change."

Yep! I keep hearing about all the changes in my old hood' (montrose). Dont' know if I'll be able to reconize it.

I will be. Headed back this weekend for a little R&R, and might stay through New Year's. I plan on going to that Seattle game, too. Its been years since I saw a Rockets game in the Summit (they don't pay me to say Compaq C so I don't).

Yeah I'll be on 290, but I was kidding. I anticipate the traffic being too heavy to really make much time. [IMG]

    Giddings?

Isn't there a great roadside BBQ place in Giddings?

Its one of those "don't blink or you'll miss it" places.

    Ah memories

Isn't the "I-10 to Hwy 71" route a quicker trip than 290 between Austin & Houston, or am I hallucinating again?

Tex, it used to be-- before the 290 bypass was completed. Until that happened, you had to stop in Hempstead, Hockley, Prairie View, some others. Now once you pass Brenham(coming from Austin), there's only one little town you go through (and the assholes have a ****in' stoplight on 290. Unreal). So, I don't think 71's faster.

It also depends where in Houston you're going. I'm heading to Kingwood, so if I take 71 to 10, I end up downtown. If I take 290, I hit the Sam Houston tollway, which dumps me right out at 59 and Beltway 8. That saves what, almost 20 miles...?

Damn straight! It is MUCH faster than 290 on its worst day.

Jeff, how long does that trip take you? Austin to Houston, going 71 to 10?

Austin to Houston going 290/tollway/59/Kingwood takes me a bit less than 2:30. I haven't tried the 71/10 route since the bypass opened. I don't see why it'd be any faster though based on where I need to end up (KW).

Kagy, since you can hit the tollway about 4 miles south of 290, I'd recommend taking the 71-I10 route. You really only hit Bastrop, which can be a b**** if you don't time it right.

I've never seen much difference between the two trips. The 71 to I10 route does avoid two towns, but I think its a little further distance-wise. I guess it depends on where you're driving in Houston (or Austin for that matter - since if you live north you have to drive south through town to pick 71 up). That Giddings construction was going on around Thanksgiving and it was a major pain then.

JV: er no, I'm not going home... uhhh... ever. So don't worry about taking 290 on Friday morning at 9 AM. I won't be there. Ha! Why would I? I'm not going home!

RM95/SamCassell: Right, except that I live off Metric so you're talking a hell of a drive (close to 20-25 miles, I'd guess) down to 71, plus the extra mileage coming up from 10 to the tollway. It just doesn't seem like it would be faster. I do 10 over the limit at all times on the way back (except for the part between Austin and Elgin-- goddamned DPS troopers love that area) and most of 290 is 70 nowadays.

I haven't lived any closer than 12 hours to my parents for 7 years until they moved 2 minutes away from me here in Austin. Now they just moved to Tyler, so the whole family will be up there! Can't wait!

Well, 50% of my parents live in Amarillo, Texas (which is where I will be for Christmas, but it's to see my sons rather than to see my father who won't even be in town) and the other 50% live in Arkadelphia, Arkansas (went there for Thanksgiving). Being in Arlington, I'm about halfway between my parents (Amarillo is a little father, but not too much).

i just drove from austin to houston yesterday. those bastards in Giddings have a ton of construction going on their part of 290 (one lane). so expect some delay there. i always hate passing through there with their ridiculous 35MPH limit.
